I joined this list because I was having constant errors using Mozilla against courier on a gentoo box.
Mozilla would barf and complain about too many cached connections, and nothing I could do on the client end would solve this.

That's not true. You can Mozilla's connection number at: Edit -> Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings -> your account -> Server Settings -> Advanced -> Maximum number of server connections to cache.

That still doesn't entirely solve the problem. At least in Thunderbird, the lowest connection count you can set is 2, and this is a per account setting. So, if (like me) you have multiple accounts on the same server, say... for multiple domains or something of that sort, you are then maintaining 2 connections per account. This can quickly add up to more than the maximum number of simultaneous connections per ip allowed by Courier.

I happened upon the setting by accident, and it was a HUGE help to my situation, as I was constantly having to close and restart Thunderbird just to be able to check my mail. I had thought for a long time that it was TBird's fault, until I noticed Mail.app was doing it as well (not that Apple is infallable, that's another story altogether) ;)

Anyway, I agree that this should be something collected into a FAQ of sorts for other folks who are currently scratching their heads in the same way I had been.

Just my $0.02, feel free to filter to /dev/null.
