I'm not too sure myself, I just wanted to get things working ;-)
As far as I can tell, BOFHBADMIME says what to do with misformatted
mail, whereas MIME/BOFHMIME say whether to try to detect misformatted
mail.

I think that the problem is that, unless you turn Courier's MIME format
checking off, it remembers the start and end positions of the message
parts over the invocation of a filter. Since filters seem to have been
originally envisaged as a yes/no mechanism this wouldn't be a problem.
However sigfilter is a re-writing filter and that's another matter
altogether.
I guess I'll have to start digging more deeply into the Courier code.
