I used to use gentoo Linux on my servers, for a few years, but it became
too cumbersome and complicated, and failure prone.

If I were you I'd check the config.log for the failed ebuild and
investigate the failure of the test compile, assuming your current
failure is the same one you encountered last time. I've had _some_ luck
in debugging compile problems by looking at at the config.log.

Beyond this, I would guess that you're looking at a gentoo ebuild
problem/bug and posting it to the gentoo bug system might get you more
help than you'll find here, although YMMV on dealing with individual
package maintainers through bugs.gentoo.org. The gentoo courier package
manager is probably subscribed to this list.

I believe that at some point I pulled courier from gentoo package
management and went to building it directly from the source from
courier-mta.org. If your current courier installation is from a gentoo
ebuild (or not!), you can run courier-config to get the configure script
arguments and adjust your custom build to put everything in the same
places. I think courier-authdaemon is built as part of the main courier
package, and this is doubtless where you're having a problem. Make sure
you have the latest development package/ebuild for ldap|slapd|whatever
installed.
