Sam, let me forward this message, as it captures what looks like a sudden rise in UTF-8 interest...Ale
This is a big nothing-burger.For starters, the only thing that's needed to add SMTPUTF8 support to an SMTP server is to advertise the SMTPUTF8 extension. Done.
All that means is that the mail server will accept mail with headers containing UTF-8.
SMTP servers do very little with mail headers. They generally ignore them completely.
Courier will happily accept mail with UTF-8 headers, now that it's no longer checking for 8-bit header content, as a spam check, and just deliver it wherever it's supposed to go.
That really leaves sqwebmail and courier-imap. sqwebmail will already accept typed in recipient names, and mail headers containing non-ASCII characters, and they will be encoded. Just need to check what will happen if a message with UTF-8-encoded headers is going to get displayed.
The point to SMTPUTF8 is to get rid of the encoding, but since everyone has to support encoded headers, at this point there's little reason to change this.
IMAP is a sticking point, because of the IMAP client on the other end not necessarily having the capability to handle UTF-8 headers. An IMAP server could, in theory, recode the message in that case, but for a number of technical reasons, that's not feasible to implement.

Aaand Google has announced that it will support this for GMail:http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2014/08/a-first-step-toward-more-global- email.htmlSo I expect there might be an increase in interest for this. Again Postfix is at the bleeding edge, nicely done. :) Regards Sebastian -- GPG Key: 0x93A0B9CE (F4F6 B1A3 866B 26E9 450A 9D82 58A2 D94A 93A0 B9CE) 'Are you Death?' ... IT'S THE SCYTHE, ISN'T IT?
