Thanks for the reference.  RFC 5321 sec 5.1 paragraph 4 says that the MX
data contains a domain that must return an A or AAAA record; all other
responses are invalid (outside the standard).

My configuration is:

mydomain.com MX mail.hosting.com
mail.hosting.com CNAME server.hosting.com
server.hosting.com A 1.1.1.1

So, this is invalid.
