Unix systems usually come with, or at least have a package for, a program
for autoresponses.
This program is called "vacation", and it does it just right. It's been
around since the mid eighties.
Here's its man page for Solaris 10:

As far as I know, the package is called "vacation" in any Linux and BSD.
