So *maybe* it's nothing to do with SSL3 but I'm not game enough to
put SSL3 back on a busy server just to test this out.

The problem with MS-ware is when it refuses to negotiate TLS, rather than provide an informative message referencing the relevant details, it comes back with some content-free gibberish about "unable to establish a connection", or something along these lines.
