General-address-literal ) "]"

Mailbox = Local-part "@" ( Domain / address-literal )
However, Courier gives a syntax error:
>>> rcpt to:<postmaster@[127.0.0.1]>
<<< 513 Syntax error.
Has it always been so? Why?
