Okay I'm a bit confused. Sorry this a bit long, but you patience and help
would be appreciated. I'll try hard to be clear.

Following the instructions at http://www.courier-mta.org/FAQ.html#rpm I got
4 dependency alerts.

##############################################################
[EMAIL PROTECTED] courier]$ rpmbuild -ta courier-0.46.tar.bz2
error: Failed build dependencies:
        openssl-perl is needed by courier-0.46-1.3AS
        xpdf is needed by courier-0.46-1.3AS
        mgetty-sendfax is needed by courier-0.46-1.3AS
        netpbm-progs is needed by courier-0.46-1.3AS
##############################################################

All but the openssl-perl went well.

It said it wanted openssl-perl-0.9.7a-35.1 but I couldn't find that version
anywhere. But I could find openssl-perl-0.9.7a-35 (no .1 )

So I tried to install that with the rpm -U

Was told that I couldn't so the upshot was that by following what the rpm
database told me (not using any -f or --force stuff) I took the distro from
openssl-xxxxxx-0.9.7a-35.1 to openssl-xxxxxx-0.9.7a-35

This is apparently a bad thing even though it didn't complain.

#########################################################

Running rpmbuild -ta courier blah started and went along for a very long
time doing lots of stuff and finally ended with a bunch of errors like this:

/usr/include/openssl/kss/.h:167 : syntax error before "kssl_check"

Rpm build errors:
        Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm_temp:67847

####################################################

What is odd is that my distro came with openssl-0.9.7a.22.1 (looking at the
source cd for RH AS 3.0) and up2date / RHN must have upgraded it to 35.1
????? When I signed up for RHN it ran a very long time.

Now up2date won't work and one of the errors is
/lib/libssl.so.4

####################################################
So it's clear to me that I can't follow what the rpm command tells me to
remove programs even though it doesn't complain.

Is there a way to save this and if so can running up2date kill it?

What would you do in this situation?

If I reinstall and get it working does this mean I should steer clear of RHN
and updates?

Thanks
Norm
