It also, I believe, depends on the use. A patent can, I think, be based
on well-known and previously described ideas, but it has to put them together
in some original and inventive way.
Rotors are well-known, but does really the use of one well-known concept
invalidate an entire patent? Or the cited patents so entirely build on
rotations that there's no other patentable contents in them?

Today 64 bits is not enough for several practical purposes that you can
run into even if you're a serious home user, or a small business. It is
safe for small rarely sent messages, if the method is good and the
keyspace is big enough, but that is not the only use for encryption.
I suggest 96 bits as a safe minimum. There's really no reason not to go
128 bits or even larger. A 128 bit block can probably be encrypted
securely slightly faster than 2 64 bit blocks on current hardware, so
you may even win on performance.

Also, you may have a slow/expensive/secure and a fast/cheap/insecure
communications channel (courier and Internet), or you may wish to
batch your courier (instead of sending him twice a week with a new
message, send him once with 100 CD-ROMs full of OTP) in order to
save money.

Adam,
I have written a program to list out the linear distribution table of your
sbox... and have found that the max entry is 24
and -24, with probability of 152/256.. roughly around 0.6 and the corresponding
input and output masks are 127 and 11,
127 and 12
NS(127,11) = 152
NS(127,12) = 104

The max entry for the linear distribution table is 24
Hence, the best linear expression of the Sbox is:
NS(127, 12) with a probability of 152/256

I think that we all agree on the concept of different tools for
different needs, each with unique advantages and disadvantages.

If the users of the firewall I administer want to use either of your
products and I don't want them to, I can stop them. (in real life I
would offer free tech support!). Your system doen't change this.

[1] Design a protocol where if one server in the chain is secure
then the user is safe.
[2] Let anyone who wants to set up a server do so.
[3] Let the user decide which servers to chain through.
This ghas been explained to you before.
