Rebels Angered By Alleged Internet Hoax

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's Zapatista rebels said Sunday one of
their favorite weapons had backfired on the Internet.

The Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) said a bogus missive was
circulating on the Internet calling for donations to help finance a Zapatista
plebiscite in Mexico on indigenous rights on March 21.

But the bank account number given was that of an organization gathering
funds for the 2000 presidential bid by Vicente Fox, a state governor with
the conservative National Action Party (PAN), the rebels said.

``We are issuing an alert to national and international public opinion and
Web surfers in Mexico and the world -- so that they do not fall into these
traps that only seek to undermine the EZLN's peace initiative,'' the
Zapatista leader Subcommander Marcos said.

Fox's campaign organization, known as ``Friends of Vicente Fox,'' was not
immediately available for comment Sunday. The organization's Web site
boasted that it collected a record 2 million pesos, some $200,000, in
February.

The Zapatistas launched a brief insurrection in 1994 for Indian rights but
have since fought most their battles on the field of public opinion.

They have used their Web site to gain international support and to publish
their peace plans as well as anti-government broadsides from their
charismatic leader Subcommander Marcos.

The bogus bulletin was similar to earlier Zapatista calls for Mexican and
international supporters to deposit money in a special bank account set
up for the plebiscite, Marcos said.

The Zapatista statement did not specify where the bogus notice was
posted on the Internet or if it was circulated by electronic mail.
