ruled that belly dancers and actresses should not perform hajj, the annual
Muslim pilgrimage, unless they quit show business. Grand Mufti Sheik Nasr
Farid Wasel said that money earned by public performance is illicit in Islam
and shan't be used to perform religious duties: "They should give up these
sins and return to God." Hajj, a combination of rituals performed in Mecca
annually, is a main tenet of Islam along with belief in God, daily prayers,

hackers have seized control of a British military communications satellite
and have issued a blackmail threat to the UK Government. One of four satel-
lites used by the British Ministry of Defense was thrown off course more

radioactive waste began a historic journey to the nation's first nuclear
waste dump amid the cheers of supporters and jeers of protesters gathered
along the route. Fog had delayed the scheduled shipment from Los Alamos
National Laboratory, but after sunset the big rig pulled out, beeped its
horn twice and began its 270-mile journey south to the Waste Isolation Pilot
Plant near Carlsbad. The driver gave a thumbs-up, and the crowd of about 100
people cheered in response. But down the road in Santa Fe, a hub of anti-
WIPP sentiment, dozens of protesters lined the waste route holding up
