-Caveat Lector-

seems you haven't seen the same pictures as me Kris, most of the refugees
i've seen look tired, depressed and like they haven't washed in weeks.
y'know, maybe their clothes could be explained by the fact that they
probably used to have the same living standards as us, certainly not a
great deal less. btw, it is possible to buy cheap-ass clothes that look
like they're really expensive, talk to me man, i hardly ever have to buy
new clothes, let-alone expensive ones, but i don't look like a bag of shit
(well, not all the time anyway ;). people can get by fine on hand-me-downs,
i know i do.

you must've been watching an american war film and mistaking it for the
news, i know it's difficult to tell the difference in America, i've seen
clips of your news, and the MSNBC Kosovo bulletin looked like a satirical
comedy program that was on ITV a while ago called brass-eye, and i thought
that what i'd heard about your news reports resembling films was
exaggerated, well, at least i know where your cynicism comes from anyway.

btw, about the short distances involved, you try walking 50 miles along a
railtrack, attempting to avoid the serbian police, AND having to take your
children, and your disabled, and your elderly with you, at a brisk pace
it'd probably take me about 15 hours. Now, the thing is, that after about 3
hours, i tend to get very sore feet, and after 4 hours my knees are about
ready to drop off, and i'd say i'm of about
slightly-less-than-average-fitness-and-endurance. so, how easy is it going
to be for small children and old people who can barely walk?

pretty fucking difficult i'd say.

so dude, before you go off and start trying to deny the reality of this,
just think, and remember that even though your news service isn't very
trustworthy, it can hardly be said to be a shining example of the type of
reporting found in the rest of the world, it tends to be widely ridiculed
over here.

no offence to america as a country or anything, but the occasional glimpses
i get of american TV make me thank the lord i'm british and get the BBC
free. my faith in the BBC got somewhat strengthened yesterday when Jeremy
Paxman said of the media (including the BBC) "Newspeak, it's George Orwell
time, who can you trust?"

it's nice to know that the people's pessimism is represented in the media ;)

>I don't want to sound cynical or anything, but after watching a wide variety
>of videos of Kosovo refugees on MS-NBC and CNN, I'd like to call attention to
>the following:
>
>(1) Why are all the women and children wearing sparkly-clean unwrinkled
>designer-label clothing? Even the old grannies, most of them dressed as if
>they had unlimited credit at Macy's or even Nieman Marcus. Look very
>carefully. Little kids are wearing Nikes!
>Hey, I'm moving to war-torn Yugoslavia too! Must have a higher standard of
>living there.
>
>(2) Why are so many of the children --not just the little ones, but the ones
>about 8 or older-- smiling and laughing, like this is FUN? Why are many of
>the women likewise grinning? No one seems to be really suffering, or even
>that disturbed. Compare THESE
>refugees with miles of Rwandans with protruding bellies and flies on their
>eyes. Maybe it's just hard to maintain one's composure when told to "look
>despairing" at TV cameras
>broadcasting your image worldwide to wealthy people who'll throw rock
>concerts for you.
>
>(3) How come nobody really looks dirty or tired in the shots of refugees
>trekking along the road? Isn't a "mass exodus" of refugees a bit wearing?
>Oh, I forgot -- it's only about 50 miles from Kosovo to Albania or
>Montenegro. Not bad if you've got a good bicycle.
>Remember, all of Yugoslavia, including Kosovo, is about the size of the state
>of Ohio.
>Try to imagine a tear-jerking flood of refugees, driven out of Cleveland into
>Columbus
>Even the Hebrews leaving Pharaoh's oppression had to travel at least as far
>as Philly.
