The Scandal in Our Own Backyard "According to The American Judges Foundation, in 70 percent of cases in which abusive men ask for custody, they succeed in gaining full or joint custody. This national scandal is made possible by the secrecy within the Family Court System and by public disbelief in the scope of the problem. The very system designed to safeguard helpless children has become a national disgrace as injustice has reached epidemic proportions....a study by the California Protective Parents Association found that 91 percent of fathers identified by their children as sexual predators received full or partial unsupervised custody-while in 54 percent of these same cases the non-abusing mother was placed on supervised visitations."   http://www.taliacarner.com/scandal.html

Whispers surrounding another important man's death prompt the question: Is there really a conspiracy? Questions dog Jagels 1/20/03 District Attorney Ed Jagels watches the arraignment of Chris Hillis, accused of murdering Stephen M. Tauzer, who was Jagels' top assistant. Some have questioned whether Jagels should have reined in Tauzer from his involvement in the legal proceedings of Lance Hillis, Chris Hillis' son and a sometime housemate of Tauzer's. If it's true that Stephen Tauzer's relationship with a young drug addict led to his own brutal murder last September, uncomfortable questions could be asked of Kern County's district attorney. By all accounts, Tauzer went to bat in an unprecedented way for Lance Hillis, giving him money, cars and lodging, and writing letters to judges on Lance's behalf." http://ww2.bakersfield.com/2003/lords/stories/jagels_1.asp

Murder Case Grips Bakersfield 12/25/02 Murder Case Grips Bakersfield "Man accused of killing a top prosecutor has people wondering what 'secrets' he knows about D.A.'s office and what a trial might reveal.   By John Johnson and Mark Arax, Times Staff Writers - Bakersfield - Years before he was accused of killing a top prosecutor, then-district attorney investigator Christopher Hillis won a $50,000 stress retirement that was five to 10 times the usual award in tightfisted Kern County. When the decorated ex-cop was asked how he had pulled it off, Hillis told former colleague Kyle Beckman that he knew some "secrets" about the district attorney's office: " 'I know where the skeletons are buried.' " "He apparently wasn't joking," said Beckman, who is still fighting the county on his own mental stress claim." http://villagenews.weblogger.com/stories/storyReader$6941

Bush: "Leave No Millionaire Behind"
Bush Finds Money to Give Every Kid Health Insurance and Head Start,
Then Gives It To The Rich. Tell Congress to Say No.
http://www.truemajority.com/index.asp?action="">
In his State of The Union Message President Bush made a passionate case for making stock dividends tax-free. Most of us who own stocks already have them in tax-free retirement accounts, so this benefit only really benefits the super-rich - to the tune of $27,000 a year for the average millionaire. Meanwhile The Children's Defense Fund calculated that just the money going to this millionaire tax cut could provide health insurance for every American kid who doesn't have it and Head Start for every eligible kid who needs it. And unlike Bush's "millionaires need more caviar" plan, this would actually create jobs right in the communities getting hit the hardest AND prepare our youngest to be successful. Tell your Senators and Representative that they should worry more about the well-being of America's kids and economy than its millionaires.

About 1.8 million people became refugees in 1991  By Tarik Kafala  BBC News Online Many Iraqis will face starvation in the event of a US-led war in the country, a United Nations official has warned. A widely-leaked UN report on the humanitarian consequences of a war has estimated that the conflict would create two million refugees. In mid-January, the Turkish Red Crescent Society began preparations for the large number of refugees expected to cross into Turkey - a 24,000-tent refugee camp is planned. UN estimates 16 million or 60% of Iraqis dependent on government rations  - Two million refugees expected (half inside Iraq)
500,000 people will need medical treatment in early stages of war - Two million children and one million pregnant or lactating women will need immediate "therapeutic feeding".... During the 1991 Gulf War Turkey received 500,000 of the 1.8 million refugees went on the move. Nearly a million crossed into Iran. The overall death toll among Iraqi civilians 12 years ago is hotly disputed. Estimates for civilian deaths as a direct result of the war range from 100,000 to 200,000. In a sustained war this time around, the expectation among aid organisations and UN agencies is that the casualty and refugee figures will be higher because the aim of the war will be regime change. All this assumes that non-conventional weapons or weapons of mass destruction are not used.

Comcast refuses anti-war ads during State of Union
JOHN CURRAN Associated Press
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - An anti-war group accused the nation's biggest cable company on Tuesday of refusing to air TV ads opposing a U.S. war with Iraq. Peace Action Education Fund spent $5,000 for air time for six 30-second ads to be aired by Philadelphia-based Comcast Corp. beginning Tuesday night. The ads were to be broadcast over CNN in the Washington, D.C., area. They were bought to coincide with President Bush's State of the Union speech, in which Bush was expected to reiterate his case for war. But Comcast's legal department notified the group Tuesday morning that the ads would not air, saying they were unsubstantiated.

Role reversal: Bush wants war, Pentagon urges caution By DOUG THOMPSON Jan 22, 2003, 01:18 -  Senior Pentagon officials are quietly urging President George W. Bush to slow down his headlong rush to war with Iraq, complaining the administration's course of action represents too much of a shift of America's longstanding "no first strike" policy and that the move could well result in conflicts with other Arab nations. "We have a dangerous role reversal here," one Pentagon source tells Capitol Hill Blue. "The civilians are urging war and the uniformed officers are urging caution." Capitol Hill Blue has learned the Joint Chiefs of Staff are split over plans to invade Iraq in the coming weeks. They have asked Secretary of Defense Donald Rumseld to urge Bush to back down from his hard line stance until United Nations weapons inspectors can finish their jobs and the U.S. can build a stronger coalition in the Middle East.
