March 14 2003 A Bordeaux doctor was suspended for six months on Tuesday for having his mistress's perfectly sane husband certified and committed to an asylum in a straitjacket. The French Medical Association's disciplinary committee ruled that Jean- Marie Delbosc, a gynaecologist often called on as a court expert, had persuaded several colleagues to issue "wholly untruthful" medical certificates on the mental health of his rival. One, signed by a close friend of Delbosc who has himself been suspended for three months, said the husband, a local dentist named Martial Corlouer, was suffering from an "acute paranoid delirium evolving towards a major risk of violence". Others described him as "unstable" and "potentially dangerous", allowing Delbosc and his mistress to obtain, in the second half of 1998, an order from the local prefect for Mr Corlouer's forced internment in a psychiatric hospital. Only after 48 days in a canvas straitjacket did the unfortunate dentist, with the aid of an independent expert, manage to convince the authorities of his sanity, and eventually secure his release. He immediately lodged a formal complaint "against persons unknown", alleging a plot to remove him from the scene and make it easier for his wife to divorce him. The medical association made no pronouncement on the alleged plot, but found Delbosc guilty of "knowingly using false health certificates" and his friend Denis Goube guilty of issuing a certificate based on "imperfections in the clinical examination" of the patient. Mr Corlouer said yesterday he was busy campaigning for stricter law on the commitment of the insane, and discussing the sale of his story to a Paris film producer.
