-Caveat Lector-
Not too sure what the
Parliamentary-style approval means? Was it an approved Party-line speech
then Prudy! Seems so.
Europe is in the grip of
anti-Americanism. And you're not sheik enough if you're not anti-Bush;
even at the camel auctions.
Hence, one would imagine that any State that has
received a fair amount of favourable US attention and is consistently in the
headlines as a potent US ally, could be anything but disliked in parts of
Europe.
Furthermore, there is the fact that Europe
is the historic homeland of the Jewish-killing Nazis, the Inquisition,
Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox anti-Semitism; its hardly surprising that
Israel would ever come up trumps in any Euro-pop contest.
Certainly Europe has nothing to boast of nor can
be a credible finger-pointer; and whilst they talk of a 'European Unity' and
peace, each petty European State has in effect become more Isolationist and
Xenophobic. When they're not a war with one another, or committing terrorist
acts against a friendly country half-a-world away, like the cowardly French
have, they're busied looking for some "outsider" scapegoat for their
problems.
If the survey is accurate, it seems Europe,
contrary to its own hoopla of progress and enlightenment is in fact in
retreat, and slouching toward its old feudal and mediaeval miasmas and
demons. And of course, collective humanity always needs some bogeyman or devil
to scapegoat its own personal, corporate, religious and national
ills.
Moreover, the writers allegation that Israel; "... a country, which has
200-plus nuclear missiles pointed at its neighbours ..." really shoots her own
arguments in the foot. If the Jews were all the crazies, emotionally and
intellectually unstable evil monsters she would have us believe; what has
prevented them for deploying these weapons, if not decency, good
judgement and a self-restraint unmatched by Israel's crazed and suicidal
critics, possibly even its US ally.
The writer also remonstrates, "Mahathir may have
been wiser to have addressed his remarks towards "Israelis" rather than "Jews"
..." well pity about Mahathir's Freudian Slip, and telling the truth, his truth
like it is; something the writer wants to conceal if at all humanly
possible.
In the writers obfuscation; she is essentially
saying that hiding her own Judeo-prejudice as political anti-Israel speak, is
far more sophisticated than Mahathir's open anti-Semitic laden sentiments.
She is quite okay with the latter's
anti-Semitism; just not the way that he so blatantly manifests
it; that's her point. Her concern is not about blatant anti-Semitism, but
it's poor semantics lack of sophisticated delivery.
The finale to the piece reeks with a certain
sanctimony, "... the scales have already fallen from our eyes and we
(Europeans) – or most of us anyway - are no longer listening" ... aside from
being reminiscent of Goebbels-speak, it reminds one of St Paul and his 'Road to
Damascus' experience. Paul's scaly-eyed
blindness was later made well; after his encounter with Jesus the
Messiah. But St Paul's blindness was not about his Jewish brothers, but
about Jesus Christ.
And after having read St Paul, one cannot
comprehend how an overtly prejudiced writer could possibly appeal to St Paul's
conversion experience as applying to a Europe which is secular, and wears
religion as a socially approved fashion statement. Indeed, St Paul
claims he would have rather surrendered his own life lest one of his Jewish
brethren should perish.
Whilst the writer appeals to St Paul, one doubts
greatly that she would appeal to St Paul.
Paul's vision of, "... neither Jew nor Gentile
...," was a blue-print for a common and shared humanity. Not the divisive pseudo-religiosity of an "us and them"
paradigm. The article reeks of the latter. It specifically trawls for any
husk or divisive miniscule; "a poll" as an introductory device, to then further
club the Jews with.
The fact that she no longer listens, shuts out
other voices, voices that do not appeal to her prejudiced palate, is more
indicative of the writers jaundice than the central figures in her
article whom she deliberately set out to demonise yet who have by and large
shown super-human courage, reserve and restraint, and against seemingly
insurmountable historic odds.
