. . .centralized banking system which answered only to the Pope. In effect,
they placed themselves outside the routine scrutiny of other church
functions. Individual monarchs at times even owed money and favors to the
Templar and were thus dependent on this military order for both protection
and financial support. An example of the subtle power and influence of the
Templars is noted at the signing of the Magna Carte in 1215. There stood next
to King John, as a co-signer and influential witness to the proceedings.
Aymeric de St Maur. Grand Master of the English Knights Templar. Aymeric also
acted as King John's confidant and, later, the executor of the King's will
[Bagent, 1989].
Eventually the Templars grew strong enough to even ignore the edicts of the
Pope and his bishops and operated independently of both church and state.
They had evolved into an institution unto itself with the Grand Master acting
as sole director of this august orsanization [Partner, 1987].
After their defeat in 1291 at the Battle of Acre, both Orders first set up
headquarters on the island of Cyprus with the reluctant permission of the
Cypriot King Henry. As Cypriot hostility towards the Orders grew because of
their wealth and power being maintained without apparent purpose, the
Hospitallers decided to move their operation to the Island of Rhodes and in
1308 changed their name to the Knights of Rhodes. After they lost the Island
of Rhodes in 1522, the Hospltallers negotiated with Emperor Charles V and
were granted residence on the island of Malta on March 23, 1530. Their name
was changed once again to Knights of Malta to reflect their new found home.
They remained on Malta until 1798 when Napoleon drove them off the island
during his campaign to Egypt. Today, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta
(Knights of Malta) exists in Rome and is recognized by the Vatican as a
sovereign state with the protocol status of both a "Roman Catholic Cardinal
and a prince of the Holy Roman Empire" [NY Times, April 7, 1988]. The
official title incorporates their history from 1113 to the present: 'The
Sovereign Military Hospitaler Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of
Malta'.
The Knights Templar, on the other hand, met a more unfortunate destiny.
Phillip the Fair, King of France, conspired with Pope Clement V to destroy
the Knights Templar in one fell swoop. Desperate for capital, circa 1307,
King Phillip saw the immense wealth of the Templars as a way out of financial
ruin. Politically, too, the Templars often sided with the barons against the
monarchs (while the Hospitallers [Knights of Malta] tended to support the
monarchs over the barons). This unfavorable alliance between Templars and
barons save impetus for Phillip to rid himself of a potential political
threat as well.'
With the Pope's cooperation King Phillip sent out orders to his senechals
throughout the kingdom to seize and confiscate all Knights Templar and their
Property. The time set for this was Friday, October 13, 1307. Jacques de
Molay, the Grand Master of the Knights Templar, in Paris at the invitation of
King Phillips was unaware of this treachery. Attending as a pall bearer "at
the funeral of Princess Catherine, the deceased wife of King Phillip's
brother, Charles of Valois the Grand Master was in perfect position to be
taken over as planned by the king. [Robinson, 1989].
As the infamous date of Friday the 13th portends Phillip the Fair arrested
Jacques de Molay and the Knights Templar as planned and through torture and
imprisonment built a case against the Templars justifying his actions. On
March 14, 1314, Jacques de Molay was burned at the stake officially ending
the era of the Knights Templar. The surviving Templar Knights dispersed
themselves throughout Europe, some going underground, while their property
was turned over to the Horpitallers (Knights of Malta), the pro-monarch
Order, for safekeeping. That is the official historical line. Several authors
are now arguing that from the ruin and ashes of the Knights Templar emerged,
like a Phoenix, the movement known today as the Freemasons, a fraternal Order
dedicated to the values of charity and mutual aid. It is also the secret
society known as Skull and Bones at Yale University that adopted the Knights
Templar symbology for its logo.
After their ouster from Malta in 1798, the Knights of Malta found shelter
under the direct oversight of the Pope within the city of Rome. Branching out
globally under this umbrella of protection, the Knights of Malta, once again,
established hospitals and financial centers to provide aid and comfort to
those in need. Although no longer crusading militarily for the "Cause of
Christ", the Knights developed themselves into n secret society, to do battle
on financial and political fronts. Roughly 1,500 Catholic Knights of Malta
exist in the United States today. William J. Casey, Lee Iacocca, General
Alexander Haig, William F. Buckley (also Skull and Bones), and Secretary of
Energy James Watkins, one of George Bush's cabinet members, are identified as
Knights of this secret society military order.[ Wilson, 1988; NY Times, 1988;
Jee, 1989].
Drawing upon this historical background, a curious set of events surrounded
the Malta Summit between Bush and Gorbachev in 1989 which, because of their
separate natures, went unnoticed by the general public.
The first event of this series concerns the Chose Manhattan Bank setting up
shop in Malta during August, 1989. Their purpose for being in Malta involved
a new strategy around Europe after 1992.
As Bradford Gordon, Vice President for Chase stated: "[W]e liked the idea of
having an operation that was close to the Common Market, but not in it" [NY
Times, Dec. 4, 1989]. Frank G. Zarb, chairman of Smith Barney Harris Upham &
Company felt that with "the right structure of laws protecting
confidentiality Malta could work better than Switzerland for Mideast clients"
[NY Times, Dec. 4, 1989]. Although Switzerland is not a part of the Common
Market, it was felt that "Swiss Practices might change when its neighbors in
the European Community drop many trade and finance barriers in 1992." [NY
Times, Dec. 4, 1989] The Maltese Labor Party was disturbed by the secrecy
surrounding development of this "offshore" bank. They also feared this would
"simply make Malta a center for money laundering" [Christian Science Monitor,
December 6. 1988].
On November 14, 1989, to help setup a climate friendly to the new banking
system, the Maltese government announced that it would end "a military
agreement with Libya". Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami, elected in 1987,
felt the military pact with Libya "strained relations with Washington and the
new agreement would "drastically amend a 1984 friendship treaty" with Libya
[NY Times, Nov. 15, 1989].
Once in office, President Bush's brother, William "Bucky" Bush (Wolf's Head
secret society, Yale, 1960), and J. Peter Grace (Knight of Malta
[unconfirmed]) visited the island of Malta in September, 1989 and returned to
advise the President that this locale should be the site for the
Bush-Gorbochev summit [Time. December 11, 1989]. There was observed to be a
great deal of secrecy surrounding this matter in its formative stages
[Newsweek, December, 1989].
In October. 1989, following on the heels of William Bush, the first official
gathering on Malta took place by the Grand Master and 500 Knights of the
Knights of Malta since Napoleon drove them out in 1798. This meeting by the
Grand Master, the first of its kind in nearly 200 years is regarded by
insiders as indicative that a "more action-oriented air" is setting in, an
action supported by 10,000 full "Knights and Dames" scattered throughout 50
nations [NY Times. Dec. 13, 1989]. What this 'action' involved was not
entirely explained by the Knights.
On May 25, 1990, the final event of this series, Pope John Paul himself
visited the island of Malta. The first time ever that a Pope has stepped foot
on the island came only five months following the Malta summit. In his
three-day visit the Pope called on the Maltese government to "prevent the
influx of any ideas or behavior alien to the island nation's Christian
tradition". This visit to the island "showed that the Vatican and Malta have
repaired relations that deteriorated during the tenure of a previous leftist
government"[LA Times, May 26, 1990].
What we are left with is a set of events, all historically significant,
taking place within a very brief period of time by major political figures,
all on a small island in the Mediterranean Sea. And the history of this
island takes us back to 1113 when a small band of crusading knights formed
the first military orders to ostensibly protect pilgrims advancing toward
Jerusalem but in fact led to the creation of o centralized banking system
still in operation today.
An argument for or against a 'conspiracy' is difficult to make despite
appearances. But there are some elements in common to the actors surrounding
the Malta summit which can be examined and from that we can possibly arrive
at an assumption of what it all means.
First, there is a patriarchal oligarchic nature of the elements common to the
Knights of Malta and the secret societies at Yale University (George Bush to
Skull and Bones and William Bush to Wolf's Head). They are exclusively led by
white males of noble birth. It would therefore seem advantageous for these
patriachs to maintain their dominance through a cooperative uniform effort in
the world of finance.
Also, there is the 'mission' or 'crusade' nature of the Summit which is
reflected in Gorbachev and Bush's phrase "New World Order" used in speeches
by the two after the Summit.
If European unity in 1992 is the focus of this 'crusade-in-the-making', the
unification of common interests by those outside the European Common Market
would necessarily take place as well. By developing Malta as a "confidential"
financial center, European unity can be kept in check through monetary
manipulation of vital markets such as oil and the shipment of oil from the
Middle East. But there is another guise to this international collusion which
is more local to the US and with greater mystery behind it.
In January, 1989, Andrew Bertie, Grand Master of the Knights of Malta
presented its Grand Cross of Merit Special Class to then-President Reagan for
Reagan's endorsement of major issues important to the Knights [NY Times, Jan.
3, 1989]. What relationship this presentation had to then-Vice President Bush
is not clearly known.
But George Bush, by different standards, w as already a Knight. The year
George Bush was initiated into the Yale Skull and Bones secret society, 1948,
he was "no longer known by his name as it appears in the college catalogue
but like a monk or Knight of Malta or St. John, becomes Knight so and so"
[Washington Post, August 7, 1988; Sutton, 1986].
To be a knight means "taking on a mission, before God and man" according to
Cardinal Casaroli, the Papal Secretary of State Who appoints Pontifical
Knights [van Duren, 1983]. Or, as President Bush stated in his August, 1988
acceptance speech. "A President must be many things ... he must be able to
define - and lead - a mission". Numerous times during this speech Bush
favored the word mission - a mission for Jobs in 8 years, for a thousand
points of light - a mission he is going to complete,
Is Bush's "mission" or 'crusade really aimed at Europe, 1992? If so, what is
it these Patriarchal societies are afraid of happening once European unity
takes place? Is there any kind of a relationship between the events
surrounding the Malta Summit and the Persian Gulf crisis between Iraq and the
US over control of oil and the Middle East? Does the Skull and Bones secret
society. through the Chase Manhattan Bank and the Knights of Malta, have an
appreciable impact on the development of this "New World Order"?
Although there are more questions than answers, the need to explore this
topic is facing both political scientists and the media. That something
extraordinoire took place on Malta in 1989 is apparent.
