-Caveat Lector- To the Editor, A Government Work Progress Adminstration (WPA) The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported on JUne 2nd that Georgia congressmen were lobbying to have the headquarters of the Free Trade Area of The Americas (FTAA) placed in Atlanta, The "plum" the Georgians are seeking is an estimated 27,000 jobs and $500 million a year a year to be generated by the FTAA bureaucracy. But these figures alone should unveil the lie that the Free Trade Area of the Americas is about encouraging freedom and promoting free markets. A bureaucracy of 27,000 employees is needed to administer a regulatory maze, not to permit "free" trade. Such a heavy regulation would touch all aspects of life throughout this hemisphere. More Socialist bureaucracy will not generate prosperity for anyone. The FTAA is not a win-win proposition for the peoples of this hemisphere. It's lose-lose. Three years ago, the Journal Constitution lent its endorsement to what Establishment leaders of both parties have been secretly promoting: "The ultimate goal of any White House policy ought to be a North American economic and political alliance similar in scope and ambition to the European Union."
