Colorado Sheriff Fingers Family Critical of Police

LITTLETON, Colo., (Reuters) - The investigation into the Columbine High School
massacre took a sour turn on Tuesday as a sheriff voiced suspicions about a
teen whose parents accused his department of shrugging off warnings about the
gunmen.

Since the April 20 massacre in which 15 people died at the school, Judy and
Randy Brown have charged that police did not follow up complaints that Eric
Harris, one of the gunmen, had threatened their son Brooks over the Internet.

In a TV interview on Tuesday, Jefferson County Sheriff John Stone hit back,
saying it was suspicious that Harris warned Brooks Brown to stay out of the
school building on the day of the shooting.

"Brooks Brown could possibly be a suspect. Brooks Brown's statements ... got
some irregularities in them. Mr. Brown as well as several others are in the
investigative mode," the sheriff said on the "Today" show on NBC.

Stone has come under fire for making statements that his spokesman later had
to retract, including one in which he said that three teens arrested near the
school on the day of the shooting were suspects, when, in fact, they had been
cleared of any involvement. He also gave an early death toll in the massacre
as up to 25.

The sheriff's office said Stone was busy in meetings all day and would not be
available to comment further on his interview. But the Browns were furious.

Randy Brown, father of Brooks, said the FBI does not consider his son a
suspect in the case and that Stone and local police were looking for
scapegoats. "It's incredible, it's wrong. He should be ashamed of himself,"
the elder Brown told the "Today" show.

His wife Judy added, "Brooks tried to stop this and now Brooks is being blamed
for it."

Randy and Judy Brown told police in March 1998 that Harris threatened their
son Brooks via the Internet. But the complaint was dropped because
investigators could not locate the Web site and because the Browns requested
anonymity, Jefferson County Lt. John Kiekbusch said last week. "We got some
information on kids that didn't get along," Kiekbusch said.

But the failure to heed the warning has put authorities on the defensive.
Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17, who broke into a car in early 1998, were
forced to attend a special program for youth offenders and ended up with
glowing reports from a supervisor in the program.

The Denver Rocky Mountain News reported on Tuesday that Brooks Brown was
supposed to be singing with the school choir at a memorial service on Sunday,
but that he left the stage after classmates taunted him. A spokeswoman at the
school district said she was not aware of the incident.

Stone also said he still believed police would find more people involved in
the conspiracy to attack the high school in this affluent suburb southwest of
Denver. "I'm convinced the evidence will (indicate) there were more people
involved ... New names are popping up ... We've got names," Stone said.

More than 100 investigators have been working for two weeks but police have
arrested only one man in the case. On Monday, police arrested a man suspected
of providing a semi-automatic handgun to Harris and Klebold.

The attorney for Mark Manes said his client knew nothing about the plans to
attack Columbine High School and was devastated. If convicted, Manes could go
to prison for up to six years.

Police said Klebold's 18-year-old girlfriend, Robyn Anderson, furnished the
gunmen with three rifles also used in the shooting. She has cooperated with
police, but Jefferson County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Davis said as of Monday
she had not been exonerated, although she was still being considered a witness
rather than a suspect.
