-Caveat Lector-

The allegedly "Communist" Red Brigade was actually an agents-provocateur
group funded by fascist millionaires (who would benefit most from the
right-wing reaction to a bogus "Communist terrorist threat") and secretly
working in consort with NATO. Its victims, oddly for a "Communist" group,
were often influential people on the Left ...
If it's surfacing again, it can only be because the alliance feels it
needs to tighten the reins on NATO-member Italy, which (like Greece) is
starting to oppose the war ...

Rome, May 21 (Bloomberg) -- Italy's Red Brigades, the far- left terrorist
group that two decades ago plunged the country into a chaos that culminated
in the murder in 1978 of President Aldo Moro, claimed responsibility for the
shooting yesterday of Massimo D'Antona, a government adviser.

In a 28-page document bearing a five-pointed star within a circle printed on
the front and published in the press this morning, the ``Brigate Rosse per la
Costruzione del Partito Communista Combattente,'' a name similar to that used
by the original group, said they killed D'Antona in an ambush near his Rome
home, seeking to ``strike at the heart of the state.''

D'Antona, an adviser to Italian Labor Minister Antonio Bassolino, was
murdered because of his position as government representative on the steering
committee for the ``Pact for Jobs and Development,'' the social contract
signed by government, unions and employers to broker peaceful deals on labor
and employment issues, the document said.

``The push to transform the old legal context . . . has been channeled and
focused, in the work of Massimo D'Antona, towards a neo-corporative politics
. . . in a context the social ends of which coincide structurally with those
of the dominant fraction of the Imperialist Bourgeoisie,'' an extract
published in Corriere della Sera said.

The language and analysis used, and the arguments employed echoed those of
the Red Brigades in the 1970s. Commentator Sergio Romano, in a front-page
editorial in the Corriere della Sera this morning noted that D'Antona
``exactly corresponds to the men who in the 1970s and 1980s were in the
sights of the terrorist organizations.''

The original Red Brigades, founded in 1969 aiming to create a revolutionary
state through armed struggle and to split Italy from the Western Alliance,
were responsible for more than 300 deaths between 1976 and 1988. Several
high-profile victims were trade unionists, non-revolutionary politicians on
the left, and labor economists.

The Red Brigades were responsible for the 1981 kidnapping of U.S. Army
General James Dozier and claimed to have murdered Leamon Hunt, U.S. chief of
the Sinai Multinational Force and Observer Group, in 1984. They were broken
up after Italian and French police arrested many of the group's members in
1989.

There have been signs that they were attempting to regroup. In 1996 shots
were fired from a stolen car into the U.S. air base at Aviano -- where many
of the planes used in the NATO bombing campaign in Yugoslavia are based --
and a grenade was thrown. Callers claiming to represent the Red Brigades
later claimed responsibility, according the FAS website.

The Italian press reported this morning that while the country's secret
services were aware of signals that the terrorists were attempting to
reorganize, they had underestimated the seriousness of the situation.

Investigators said that while the group behind the D'Antona killing probably
consisted of about 20 people, led by an ideologue, the way in which it was
carried out suggested the group is well-organized.
