I won't deny that German romantic occultism had much in common with
present-day "New Age" beliefs. But this essay represents a serious
misunderstanding of Goodrich-Clarke's book. The whole point is that there was
no widespread occult conspiracy behind Nazism. There was a hodge-podge of very
small cults, all of them extremely intellectual, which overlapped to a
considerable degree with German Theosophy and Anthroposophy. A few members of
the German political and social elite became members of one or another of
these cults. Popular culture did absorb a lot of the jargon and symbols of the
cults, such as the swastika; but to proclaim that German occultism was
Satanic, and to identify nineteenth-century German occultism with the modern
Western New Age movement, is naive and foolish. Are there common elements?
Certainly. But there is NO overarching conspiracy involved--by the very nature
of the New Age movement, any attempt to coordinate, let alone control, its
very disparate elements is inevitably doomed to failure. And that happens to
be the most important lesson to be drawn from Goodrich-Clarke's book. If you
read nothing else from this book, read the appendix dissecting modern
so-called "scholarship" on the occult connections of the Nazis such as Pauwels
and Bergier. Goodrich-Clarke is scathing in his assessment of their
incompetence as scholars.
