Dancing Graduates' Diplomas Held
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- One boy did a version of Michael Jackson's famous
``moonwalk'' dance, gliding backward across the stage. Another shimmied and
shook his rump.
Sound like a hip party? Try a high school graduation ceremony.
And now, the six graduates of Ruskin High School are in hot water for
apparently expressing a little too much joy at receiving their diplomas at
graduation.
District officials are holding the students' diplomas until they perform 10
hours of community service.
The acts qualified as ``disorderly conduct'' that violated the graduation
plan signed by each of the school's 162 graduates before the ceremony
Tuesday, officials said.
``The ceremony was going fine,'' said Hickman Hills School District spokesman
Gary Martasin. ``As soon as the first student acted different, then it
started. It's a snowball effect that we have to guard against. The next thing
you know, you've lost control.''
But not everyone agrees with the district's reaction. One parent has
contacted the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and Western Missouri.
Dick Kurtenbach, ACLU executive director, said it was an interesting case.
``There is a civil liberties issue involved in the freedom of expression,''
Kurtenbach said. ``I think the school would be hard-pressed to say that the
act disrupted the ceremony.''
