The only way the macro virus could infect an actual e-mail message is if you are using Outlook and have set Word as your e-mail editor. In that case, when you create or open a message you are actually opening and running Word. The safest thing to do is (a) NEVER open an attachment to an e-mail message without running your antivirus program on it first; and (b) if you're using Outlook, make sure you have the program set to RTF (Rich Text Format) or text-only--neither format uses macros and therefore neither is susceptible to macro viruses.
