-Caveat Lector-

I totally agree with you, Eagle.

I think the current "portfolio system" (keeping folders on kids, then
tracking them as they make their way through the system) is a destructive
one.

But who is to blame? Look...we have religious conservatives who want to
turn public schools into a religious forum for their beliefs. There are
the sports nuts (sports is out unofficial secular religion) who want the
educational system to be an extension of the professional sports teams..
others see the educational system as an arena for social experimentation
(in order to stem the tide of hate and despair).

Then, there are those individuals who want to see the corporate community
involved in the development of the curriculum:"Let's turn the little
stinkers into disciplined workers who possess the necessary skills to
compete in "the global marketplace."

The school system, teachers, parents and kids are whipsawed back in forth
as they respond to all of these competing interests who are interested in
developing their own particular agenda for the children.

The school system becomes the whipping boy (or girl) of our society.

And as "we" self-destruct, the elites move quietly along, sending THEIR
kids off to expensive schools where they know the children will receive
the necessary training to assume positions of leadership within the
country. And what do the elite kids learn at Andover and Phillips?
Well, their instructors expect them to be thoroughly grounded in academic
subjects... Philosophy, literature, Latin, Greek, political science...
They are encouraged to develop an appreciation for classical music, the
fine arts, the ballet...Shakespeare...the plays of Moliere...

And what are their working-class and middle class counterparts doing?
Well, they are listening to rap, watching MTV, spending countless hours
developing their athletic skills in order to keep them out of trouble,
playing video games, experimenting with alcohol and sex, watching
television, spending time with their friends.

Education, teachers and academics are devalued. Instead, they are assured
by the media that capped teeth, a winning smile and a nice body are all it
takes to be successful in America. The image has supplanted the reality.

The crusty, old news reporters with bald heads have been replaced by Kens
and Barbies... But it's much worse: now, there is a subtle societal
pressure for every aspect of our culture to succumb to the media dynamic.
Real people (remember them...the fusty, odd-shaped unique looking folks
who made the system operate) have been replaced by airheads....

You see, as our system continues down this road of corporatization, the
"downsizing" is only the tip of the iceberg. We are witnessing a complete
restructuring of the system...

Now, I will grant you that there are still thousands of corners around the
country that have still not succumbed to this....but the pressure is on.
Wherever you go in the US, Americans have been told that in order to keep
their jobs in the new global economy, they must conform to the new
realpolitik. There's a great deal of fear in the air out here in the
heartland....a nasty undercurrent of pressure. ..a little reminiscent of
Stephen King's "The Langoliers"...... Many Americans fear that if they
don't conform and tow the line..they'll be resigned to the economic
dustbin.

And, of course, who are the new "underclass"? Well, they're just our
fellow Americans who have fallen by the wayside. They're the frumpy bag
ladies...the families living in the homeless shelters...the young
Americans who never finished high school who can be found at intersections
holding up signs stating they'll work for food.

And where does the responsibility rest for this widening of the cultural
divide? the increase in racism and hate? It's a shared responsibility.
We've done much of it to ourselves by voting in "free traders" and
globalists, by failing to take care of the pressing social problems in
our midst when we could have made a difference in the lives of people.

When we should have been thinking about what is in the longterm economic
interests of our children....will they have a decent job and decent life,
instead, we've been pursuing failed policies abroad.

And now, like junkies in need of a fix, we are dependent on these global
economic forces to prop up this system. Rather than looking to upgrade
and improve wages, health care, housing, the educational system, our
Republicrats are bringing in more individuals to keep us dependent on
cheap labor....more money needs to be paid to Russia, China, Mexico...God
knows where..in order to keep the bankers happy.. and nothing will
change... It can only get worse.

If you want to look at the future of America. Just look at Mexico or
Brazil, two nations run by small oligarchies who control vast sums of
money
while millions of their citizens live in shacks and go hungry. That is
the future being planned for us. During a flight into Mexico City, former
President Bush expressed admiration for the city with its teeming slums
choking in pollution, a deregulated paradise, where the rich are protected
by bodyguards carrying Uzis and the poor huddle in their cardboard shacks.

Welcome to the New World Order paradise!
