SPAM SUCKS, but the guy has an interesting point about potential for abuse by search engines. Perhaps we should support OPEN SOURCE based search engines (where the programming code is open for viewing, using, altering, etc...) Dave Hartley http://www.Asheville-Computer.com http://www.ioa.com/~davehart -----Original Message----- From: Conspiracy Theory Research List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Bill Sent: Sunday, August 01, 1999 1:39 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [CTRL] Mars Monoliths, Carl Sagan, and Bill Nye -Caveat Lector- I received this as a random mailing on an artificial intelligence list I peruse...its very cryptic and when I followed some of the links I was kind of blown away...I am out of my league on this one...if anyone can shed some light I would be most appreciative....it appears this was a random mailing: Dear friend, My name is Conrad, Cal Tech physicist, and as America celebrates this weekend its national festive Independence Day, I would like to request a few minutes from your time to hopefully make you consider a warning (or a wake-up call!) which I wholeheartedly think you will always feel grateful to. This is specially so if you are a person who esteems highly this so precious, and currently so endangered, particular Constitutional right of America, which the heroic patriotic fathers of this nation died to offer to its people, and which is called the right to total, and uncensored, free speech. I imagine that you are of the opinion that the so-called "unsolicited bulk e-mail" or "spam" is often boring or even obnoxious, specially if you happen to be the recipient of these messages in your e-mail box. However, today I would like to take the opportunity to call your attention to the fact that, in a society like the Western society where all the "free" big media outlets systematically censor politically-incorrect messages, and where no major publisher and no school bookstore will ever touch any books that get too close to describing what is really going on in the world; the internet remains as the only vehicle for an individual to share his/her uncensored views, and his/her factual findings about the world, with others. While there is clearly a difference between freely expressing one's views and foisting them on others, it is nevertheless certain that hardly can one aspire to express his/her views freely to others if others don't even give him/her the chance to speak up and show that he/she is worth listening to. "Free speech" becomes an empty word if the only place where you can freely "speak" is the internet and then only by posting personal webpages which you know almost no-one will read, because not only don't you have the big financial means to promote them like the politically-correct big-wigs do, but also, and most alarmingly, recently some "free" internet search engines are tightening the criteria for webpage submissions to be accepted, thereby effectively blocking your new personal webpage from being "heard" by others. Hence I think that, if the right to "free speech" is not to effectively degenerate into the right to mere "free soliloquy", then direct e-mailing of your message to strangers, or "spam", remains, boring or intrusive as it may at first seem to them, as the only affordable way left to make your message reach them, specially if this message happens to be an urgent and really important one, as this one is, and therefore one which most media channels of our dumbed-out, politically-correct, hypocritical Truman-Show society will systematically censor. "Spam" can bring trash to your mail; yet trash it only takes one click of a button to delete. But "spam" can also bring you once in a while a surprise like this one, a good, kind and enlightening surprise, by giving you at last the opportunity to have access to different views and reports which, fully correct or not, their most likely good-intentioned sender presumed you would be grateful for having heard. "Spam" is one of the very few ways left nowadays for a single individual to bypass censorship and make his/her message reach large sectors of society, and show them if he/she is just a fool not worth listening to again, or on the contrary a responsible person who has used the double-edged sword of "spamming" in a responsible way and for a responsible worthy purpose. I wholeheartedly contend that, as our wise Constitutional fathers sternly warned, "the price of liberty is eternal vigilance"; and I further contend that the personal exercise of vigilance which is to keep welcoming any "unsolicited" mail to your mailbox; and to keep rejecting any mass-media conditioning intended to make you fear, and ultimately accept the outlawing of, "intrusive" "weird" messages which you can always throw away in a second if you don't like them; this exercise of vigilance is a very, very small price to keep paying for something which, in my view, is and will always be simply priceless, and this is our right to freely speak to others, whether we may be in the end right in what we say or not. Have my words disrupted or infuriated you so far? Has the small personal exercise of reading these first points of my message until now been a waste of time? Have I used this priceless opportunity of expressing my views that you have so kindly offered to me until now, to instigate "racial hatred", "cyber-terrorism", "xenophobic bigotry", or simply something unlawful? Have you lost at any moment the right to stop reading, delete this message, and move on to other business if you don't like what you are hearing from me? No? Then today I invite you to reconsider why it is that the subtle but pertinacious onslaught of mass-media conditioning seems to create the public impression that the internet is a bad and "dangerous" medium. Part of the reason may be because this pre-Orwellian, post-modern, conformistic, consumeristic world we live in, and the corporate big brothers who financially rule it, simply underestimate you. They may commonly erect themselves as Net-Nannies who think they know best about what you should or should not be allowed to hear ("any news that's fit to print") through your telescreen or any other medium; ignoring that you are most surely a responsible, mature adult who knows that only you can determine if you are "ready" or not to hear everything that is being said in this world. The global Orwellian cyber-patrols rampantly ignore that, by definition, the only person who has the right to bottleneck and filter out this flow of reports and decide if these reports are worth hearing and substantiating by you is you. Are you ready to learn what's really going on in the world by at last listening for yourself to all the reports that, until now, all major media-outlets will block? Are you man or woman enough to take the "red" pill and discover at last what lurks behind "The Matrix" of empty laughing faces, decadent soap operas, school-shootouts, relentless financial mergings, and bowing conformistic citizens robotically reassuring each other about their national freedoms while penuriously treading the urban jail in mortgaged business suits, which we are fed everyday to believe is "the real world"? Are you game? Are you game to be safely "unplugged" from the computer game, reach the Thirteenth Floor, and play at last the real game? If the answer is a "no", then with my best wishes I kindly invite you to stop reading, delete this message immediately, revert to playing with your computer, keep being a good boy or girl, and go back to sleep with Net Nanny. Happy Fourth of July. But if the answer is a "yes", if this message has struck a cord in you, if these words only come to begin to suggestively confirm what you had never quite known but what you had always somehow "felt" and recently increasingly suspected, if you are tired of games and would like to at last grow up and face the real world however bad it may turn out to be then, then I cordially, and respectfully, invite you to wake up, read on, pass this message on to others, Fight the Future while you still can, and buckle up, because, from this Independence Day on, the words "computer virus" suddenly take on for mankind a new and entirely unpredictable meaning What is it that Carl Sagan really knew that he waited almost till the very moment he passed away to heroically and suggestively insinuate it in his movie "Contact", after he had so angrily denied it publicly all his life? Why was my good old pal Brian O'Leary, former Cornell Planetary Scientist at Sagan's invitation, U.S House Interior special energy consultant, and only American geologist trained by NASA for a manned mission to Mars, recently kept from giving a formal talk in the campus of the very University where he once had his best friends? Why is my other pal CSETI International Director Doctor Steven Greer suddenly being acclaimed by military top-brass and aerospace-industry leaders all over the world as he addresses audiences of more and more important people on topics of black-back-engineered technologies and governmental disclosures that until very recently had been simply held as "untouchable"? And, even though everybody agrees that our global ecosystem is dying and that a serious alternative to our air-choking greenhouse-inducing fossil-fuel burning is urgent, why is a magazine like Eugene Mallove's "Infinite Energy", which updates the reader on serious confirmed advances in controlled warm-temperature nuclear fusion and other clean new energy technologies that could instantly regenerate the world and put an end to both greenhouse/pollution concerns and electricity bills, still overwhelmingly rejected by most bookstores and newsagents? ---------------------------------------------------------- And, most importantly... WHY WOULD THE ACADEMIC ESTABLISHMENT NOW BE MOST LIKELY TERRIFIED IF YOU HAPPENED TO LEARN ABOUT WHAT BILL NYE ALLUDED TO DURING HIS BEAUTIFUL OFFICIAL 1998 COMMENCEMENT SPEECH AT CALTECH?
