GIs blame health problems on vaccine

They tell Congress anthrax serum is causing sicknesses

By April Taylor / News Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. servicemen told Congress Wednesday
that the mandatory vaccine designed to thwart anthrax -- the germ
agent most likely to be used in a biological terrorist attack --
is to blame for their declining health.

"I was healthy before; now I am not," testified Air Force
pilot Jon Richter of Dover, Delaware, before the House
Subcommittee on National Security, Veterans Affairs and
International Relations.

Richter said his troubles began in February when, five days
after his second shot of the anthrax vaccine, he experienced
aches in his shoulder, ankles and feet. Today, the 36-year old
said, he often walks with a limp.

The vaccine, required for the 2.4 million soldiers in the
armed forces, is manufactured solely by Lansing-based BioPort
Inc.

BioPort was owned by the state of Michigan until last year
and is in the process of renegotiating its contract with the U.S.
Department of Defense for the vaccine.

Wednesday's hearing -- perhaps determining the fate of the
anthrax vaccine -- comes at a time when a growing number of
military personnel are opting to resign and risk their military
status rather than take the vaccine.

"We are growing tired of the denials that everything is okay
when in fact it isn't," Richter told Congress.

U.S Air Force Lt. Richard Rovet told the subcommittee that
more than 30 cases of adverse reactions have been reported where
he is stationed in Dover, Del.

Severe dizziness, ear ringing, joint pains, memory
impairment, numbness, rash, chills and fever, swollen testicles,
and even one possible miscarriage are all linked to the
vaccination, Rovet claimed.

Maj. Gen. Robert Claypool, spokesman for the Department of
Defense, said the anthrax vaccine, which has been licensed by the
Food and Drug Administration for 30 years, is no more dangerous
than other vaccines.

"The risk of not immunizing presents a public health threat
that extends beyond personal health concerns," Claypool said.

Despite the controversy surrounding his product, Robert
Myers, head of BioPort Inc, said he is confident there will
always be a market for the vaccine.

"The future of BioPort is still bright," Myers said.
