Ah, now we get into the paradox-laden realm of "future evolution".
Since evolution is [among other things] "the survival of changes
over time"; and since the future hasn't happened yet; then there
is no way to determine just what changes will occur. But we CAN
note that various stages of evolution apply:
1) Chemical evolution - The fitting-together of elements into the
hydrocarbons, polymers, proteins that give rise to life;
2) Biological evolution - The fitting-together of DNA into a wide
range of life-forms, including we more-or-less hairy primates;
3) Social evolution - The fitting-together of humanoid individuals
into groups, allowing the survival of individuals who couldn't
exist on their own, but who have valuable skills for the group;
4) Cultural evolution - The fitting-together of technological
specialists - farmers, toolmakers, engineers, workers - resulting
in immensely more productivity than individuals or small groups;
5) Directed evolution - The fitting-together of information &
biochemical & genetic technologies to build humans to order,
engineered for any environment we may encounter.
We've gone through stages 1-4 and have entered stage 5. As we
expand thru the universe we'll build more and more diverse forms
of 'humans', any of which may be successful in surviving in various
niches and who thus may be thought of as "our successor". What'll
they look/act/think like? Depends on where you are, eh?
