Dare one speculate on the purview of the "Dental Placque" subcommittee over
SLS and TRICLOSAN?!

Brings immediately to mind the massive 50 year disinformation program on
FLUORIDATION, doesn't it?
It appears that TRICLOSAN and SLS are being used in toothpaste.
SLS is present in nearly EVERY non-"health food store-type" Shampoo.
TRICLOSAN is present in the vast majority of soaps marketed as
"antibacterial" - also in dishwashing products.
EPA claims that SLS is present in "fruit juices."

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): Used as
detergents and surfactants, these closely related compounds are found in
car wash soaps, garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers, yet are even
more widely used as major ingredients in cosmetics, toothpaste, hair
conditioners, and about 90% of all shampoos and products that foam.
According to Dr. Keith Green, Ph.D., D.Sc., of the Medical College of
Georgia, SLS denatures proteins of the eye tissues, impairing development
permanently. Because it is absorbed through the skin, it does not have to
enter the eye directly.
Moreover, The Journal of the American College of Toxicology states: Sodium
Lauryle Sulfate (SLS) impairs proper structural formation of young eyes and
causes permanent eye damage. SLS causes eye irritation, is linked to
cataracts, and delays healing of corneal tissue. Other research has
indicated SLS may be damaging to the immune system, especially within the
skin. "Skin layers may separate and inflame due to its protein-denaturing
properties."
One of the most dangerous of all ingredients in personal care products,
research shows that "SLS when combined with other chemicals can be
transformed into nitrosamines, a potent class of carcinogens that cause the
body to absorb nitrates at higher levels than eating nitrate-contaminated
food."
According to the American College of Toxicology report, SLS stays in the
body for up to five days.
Other studies show that SLS easily penetrates the skin and enters and
maintains residual levels in the heart, liver, the lungs, and the brain.

Triclosan: The latest rage in the arsenal of antibacterial chemicals,
included in detergents, dish washing liquids, soaps, deodorants, cosmetics,
lotions, creams, and even toothpaste.
The EPA registers triclosan as a pesticide, giving it high scores as a risk
to both human health and the environment, and the USP recently proposed a
new monograph for its specific testing. Triclosan is a chlorinated aromatic,
similar in molecular structure and chemical formulation to some of
the most toxic chemicals on earth: dioxins, PCBs and Agent Orange. Its
manufacturing process may produce dioxin, a powerful hormone-disrupting
chemical with toxic effects in the parts per trillion: one drop in 300
Olympic-size swimming pools! Hormone disrupters pose enormous long-term
chronic health risks because they interfere with the way hormones perform.
Triclosan is a chlorophenol, a class of chemicals suspected of causing
cancer in humans. Externally, it causes skin irritations, but since
"...phenol can temporarily deactivate the sensory nerve endings...contact
with it often causes little or no pain." Internally, it can lead to cold
sweats, circulatory collapse, convulsions, coma, and death. Stored in body
fat, it can accumulate to toxic levels, damaging the liver, kidneys and
lungs, and can cause paralysis, sterillty, suppresssion of immune function,
brain hemorrhages, decreased fertility and sexuall function, heart problems,
and coma.
Boston-based microbiologist Laura McMurray and colleagues at the Tufts
University School of Medicine say that "triclosan is capable of forcing the
emergence of 'superbugs' that it cannot kill. And experiments have shown
that it may not be the all-out germ killer scientists once thought it
was...Using triclosan daily in the home -- in products ranging from
children's soaps to toothpaste to 'germ-free' cutting boards -- may be
unwise."

"Since there are many compounds in the toothpastes, it is often not clear,
which product causes which adverse reaction. Almost any compound may provoke
an adverse reaction in the oral cavity or on perioral surrounding. Most of
the described reactions are presented in case reports, only a few controlled
studies are reported. Screeing the literature (to the seventeenies) shows
the following toxic/allergic reactions:
oral desquamation (erythema, sloughing, mucosal ulceration),
     cheilitis,
     perioral dermatitis,
     burning mouth.
The following agents are most often cited in the literature:
     detergents (SLS) ...

The following is excerpt from a STATEMENT OF SENATOR EDWARD M. KENNEDY ~ FDA
REFORM AND COSMETIC PREEMPTION .
http://www.senate.gov/~kennedy/statements/970905fdacosmetics.html
A study by the General Accounting Office reported that more than 125
ingredients used in cosmetics are suspected of causing cancer. Twenty
cosmetic ingredients may cause adverse effects of the nervous system,
including headaches, drowsiness, and convulsions. Twenty cosmetic
ingredients are suspected of causing birth defects. The GAO concluded that
"cosmetics are being marketed in the United States which may pose a
serious hazard to the public."
