Nortel's Digital PowerLine has been cancelled -- in the UK --
but this backdoor potential is still there, in any local area.
A fully- secure computer system might require a specially
isolated power supply, if not a means to monitor the power
cord to rule out intermittant, unauthorized data transfers.

Bright sparks cut the wire on Web electrics
--------------------------------------------
By Mark Ward, Sep. 16, 1999
THE plug has been pulled on an attempt to provide
Internet access by piping data down power lines.
Nor.Web has been developing Digital PowerLine for two
years, using mains cables rather than telephone lines.
The data would reach substations via a conventional
fibre network and be distributed to homes via
electricity cables. The company claimed that Digital
PowerLine could download at up to 2mbit/s -- far faster
than even the quickest modems.
Unfortunately, its promise has not paid off. A spokesman
said that fierce competition for customers who want
high-speed Internet connections and the imminent arrival
of cable modems and ADSL put the viability of the project
in doubt. As a result, United Utilities and Nortel
Networks decided to end the project.
Amateur radio buffs had claimed that pumping data down
the same cables as mains electricity caused interference
with some radio frequencies. The hams said the data was
being rebroadcast by street lamps also connected to the
substations handling the data. Nor.Web denied any such
problems.
