The famous editorial, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" appears in
the New York Sun newspaper. Virginia O'Hnalon wrote a letter to the New
York Sun asking "Please tell me the truth: is there a Santa Claus?" The
response will become one of the most widely reprinted newspaper editorials
of all time and will appear in books, movies, greeting cards etc. The
reply, printed on page six of the newspaper without a byline was written
by Francis Pharcellus Church. Church will die in 1906. The Sun will go
under in 1950, and Virginia O'Hanlon Douglas, who will grow up to become a
New York educator will die in 1971.
"Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists
as certainly as love and generosity and devotion
exist, and you know that they abound and give
your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How
dreary would be the world if there were no Santa
Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no
Virginias. There would be no childlike faith
then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable
this existence."
