Peace at any cost is a prelude to war!

On the Stump

One day a GOP candidate decided that he needed more exposure in front of the
farming community of the country. So, he set out on his journey across
America to visit different agricultural communities. As he was traveling
down a dirt road in a small town his eyes fell upon a farmer working out in
his field. He decided that this was as good a place as any to start his
campaigning, and so he parked his car and went over to meet the farmer.

He introduced himself, and asked it he could present his campaign speech to
the farmer. "Sure", said the farmer. "Would it be all right if I invited my
wife and some of our friends from town to listen as well?" "Absolutely",
replied the politician, who by now was excited at the possibility of speaking
to a crowd of people. "Is there a place from which I may address the
people?", he asked. "Well we don't have a podium as such, seeing as this
here is farm land, but I suppose you could use that manure pile over there",
the farmer replied.

The politician thought that this was somewhat un-orthodox, but not wanting to
offend the farmer he agreed. Later that evening a crowd of townsfolk were
gathered to hear what the politician had to say. They listened intently, and
when it was finished they clapped and cheered.

Having completed his speech he thanked the people and went over to the farmer
and asked, "What part of the speech do you think the people liked the best?"
"I dunno", said the farmer. "These people don't pay much attention to
politics, but this is the first time we have ever heard a Republican speak
from a Democrat platform."

Feinstein Screws Up, Tells Truth

“...I’m one Democrat, frankly, that doesn’t feel that (an) across-the-board
cut of one percent is anything untoward. I feel any good budget manager
should be able to handle that without a problem.”

- Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) on CNN’s “Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer,”

Will GOP Learn From the Virginia Lesson?

“Republicans won control of both houses of the Virginia State legislature for
the first time since Reconstruction. ... There Governor Jim Gilmore did a
remarkable job of recruiting candidates, raising money for the candidates and
then operating the best voter identification and turnout operation I have
seen on the Republican side in years. If there were Republican votes to be
had for these legislative candidates they found them.

“I live in Virginia. My own state Representative, Roger McClure, cast some
courageous votes on the gun issue, trying to uphold the U.S. Constitution.
The Democrats made this THE issue. They made McClure out to be an enemy of
children. The Republicans found every pro-McClure voter and got them to the
polls. Mrs. Weyrich said we received no less than eight calls on Election Day
to be sure we had voted. She was so exasperated at having to answer the phone
for McClure she was tempted to switch sides. But it worked. McClure won by
400 votes, yet internal Democratic polling showed him losing.

“The McClure example was not unique. I talked to a former staffer for a
leading Democrat in Southern Virginia. He told me he had never seen an
Election Day operation such as was run by the Gilmore people. No such
similar effort was made in other areas of the country. ... If the Republicans
do not operate a massive nationwide voter ID and turnout operation similar to
the one in Virginia they will lose a close election nationwide.

“... Democrats are remarkably disciplined. Even when their president has been
impeached and is viewed as a national disgrace they hang together.
Republicans get embarrassed when someone like Richard Nixon lets them down.
Democrats are beyond embarrassment. So yes, I believe there is a real lesson
from the elections last week. The Democrats are alive and well and highly
competitive for next year. Republicans kidded themselves about how history
was on their side in 1998. Maybe this election will convince them that there
is no substitute for old-fashioned organization. But then maybe not. They
are, after all, Republicans.”

- Paul Weyrich, Free Congress Foundation, 11/8/99
