Bush Family Book Burning

Fortunate Son, the ill-fated biography of Gov. George W. Bush, was
recalled for burning by the publisher, a decision that remarkably drew
applause from the national news media. Indeed, the only visible media
complaint was that the critical biography was written in the first place.
What was missing from this coverage was any concern about the spectacle of
influential politicians -- former President Bush and his son --
complaining about a book and then having it burned. The right-wing
Washington Times even hailed what it termed the "finality of the furnace."
Though there may have been legitimate questions about both the book and
its author, the act of burning a political book in this fashion appears to
lack a precedent in the history of American democracy. Plenty of books
with errors have been written about politicians. But the well-connected
Bushes demonstrated again that they have a way of making things happen.
