Moderator Mark Fraser ([EMAIL PROTECTED] ) Editor's Note: Below you will find a hog-pog of articles and weird happenings that has been apart of HS, the Moderator Mark Fraser (MarkFraser@hauntedscotla nd.freeserve.co.uk ) has written a brief on explaining his discussion group (with I'm apart of) I hope if your are into a good group that you will give it a try... I used to edit a magazine called Haunted Scotland, which I have now stopped, basically because of the lack of time. I have for many years collected, investigated, interviewed and visited countless locations and people in search of ghosts, and to a lesser extent UFO's. I am also very much interested and involved in collating and looking into the Big cat sightings especially in the Ayrshire area of Scotland............and well anything that can be deemed as 'out of the norm', so to speak. I would love to hear from anyone with knowledge of sightings, or any strange activity in the Ayrshire area of Scotland, and also from Hull in East Yorkshire, England. The Haunted Scotland list was created for people to report on news items from their local papers, no matter what area they are or country that they are in. General chit-chat, personal experiences, events, research, activities, etc etc.........on subjects covering ghosts \ UFO's \ Cryptozoology \ Psychic Phenomena and all things Fortean. Although a small handful of people post, a lot dont bother and thats not what it was about. Arguing, abusing people is really not tolerated, anyone wanting that can go somewhere else. The mag and the list are just a by product. Community email addresses: Post message: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe: Hauntedscotl [EMAIL PROTECTED] List owner: [EMAIL PROTECTED] m or [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/HauntedscotlandMM List members come from all area's of subjects, Psychical Societies, UFO's, Crypto etc etc........authors, investigators, documentary makers etc...........and the interested. From all over the British Isles, USA, Canada, Australia, Europe, Asia.........so obviously not confined to the borders of Scotland, anyone is welcome to join, although joining in is expected, even if its to say hi. Also stop in to see the Ayrshire Big Cats at http://www.killie.totalserve.co.u k A. A Haunted Bus In Kilmarnock bus drivers have reported the ghostly figure of bald headed man who is seen sitting on the top deck, as the driver looks through the internal mirror system. Two separate drivers have witnessed this, on going to investigate the bus is found to be empty. Other drivers believe its a trick of the light. On one occasion a driver asked the controller to look through the mirror system, which he did and saw the man. The controller then went upstairs to look and found no one. Although the driver could still see him and also the perplexed looking controller. I myself have drove this bus three times on service, (on one occasion the brakes burnt out) but have yet to see the man.......who knows maybe I will soon......on a dark winters night, when the bus is empty....... The fleet No. is 903, a double decker on the A1 service (Stagecoach) used mainly between Kilmarnock and Ardrossan, for those in the area who are interested. B. The Field of Dreams It happened such a long time ago now, no living man has the memory of it, but in those times anguished screams, wails and moans could be heard echoing through the valleys, the dales and glens even long after the terrible, criminal inhumane deeds had been done. Did we deserve such a thing, such a defeat, why in our defeat were we made to grovel, to beg........to suffer even in our deaths...because that is what we are doing, centuries after, our souls cry from the ground in anguish, in pain....betrayed by our own, betrayed by our fathers, sons, mothers, daughters and friends. Betrayed by our leaders, weak and ineffectual some may have been and it did not do our cause any justice to be led by a man who had not lived upon this land and who did not know us, who left us to die and never return after he scurried away to save his own hide.....but still there were those of us who risked their lives so he could escape across the seas.......to die a broken man. Broken dreams there were many, lives destroyed, families broken. We wanted our land for ourselves, our homes to raise our families, our country to live. Was that so wrong, do you not want the same even today, whoever or wherever you are.....Was that so much to ask, is still too much to ask for my friend. Find your spirit once again, rise, this time we will reclaim our land with something more mightier, more stronger then we had before, this time we will win with the pen, with the spoken word. Our land will belong to us once more and the restless spirits who wander the field of dreams will find peace, they will rejoice......such terrible wrongs had been done to them that they cannot yet go forward until justice is done. And those men, those perpetrators of the crimes, there are some who still do not repent as yet, some who believe that what they did was right and proper. O what fate these souls will suffer on the terrible day of their judgement.....O what anguish they will suffer, I do not wish as half as the pain and suffering that we have endured through the centuries on those people who caused it, nay I cannot do that, all I want, all we want, all you want my dear wandering, confused friend is our homes back, the way it was, our families, our blood. Returned once more to those and the future generations of those who died that fateful and terrible day on the field of dreams. The next time you are there, be it in the still of the night, the bright sun of the afternoon or in the drizzle of a wet mourn, take time to ponder, to remember, to feel, as you have felt before. The very real physical pain. The despair, the frustration of not realising that you are dead and your futile efforts of combat....the swish of the sword has no effect on those that are still living. Look with your inner eyes and you will see the restless wandering spirits who were once you comrades in arms. Who once you fought, lived, ate and laughed and died with. C. The Clansman Fergus McGregor was born in what is now the present day area of Ross and Cromarty, not far from Invergordon on the Cromarty Firth. His village has long since gone, the last inhabitants forcebly taken away by the English during the clearances. What a pitiful sight it must have been. The villagers gathering what little possessions they could, then herded together by the jeering men in redcoats, not knowing what the future would hold. How the despair must have weighed heavily on their hearts, as they watched their homes burn to the ground. Today you would not know that a village once stood on the bleak landscape, but once it had been a thriving community. Both Fergus and his wife married very young, and by the time he had reached the age of twenty two they had two children, Jamie who was four and Katrina at the tender age of three years. Despite the troubled times Fergus McGregors home was a happy one. His wife Jeany, always had food cooking on the open fire, but ttragedy was soon to befall the Highland folk. The McGregors had always been a fierce clan, once forbidden to hold any meeting with more then four clan members present, for over a century it was even deemed to be a crime to use the name McGregor. Both Fergus and his seventeen year old brother Rory, were no exception to the tradition of the McGregors, both having fought in many a skirmish against the invading English and traitorous Scotsmen. It was a sad day for Fergus when he witnessed the death of Rory at the hands of a redcoat, but he had died like a man defending his home and family. It was while Fergus was away on such a skirmish that they had come and burned his village. His wife and son died in the flames of their croft, Katrina had escaped to a near-by settlement with a few of the villagers, the rest had been herded away. Fergus and the remaining clansmen searched in vain for their families. Soon winter set in, the clansmen became cold and hungry and not many survived the snows. It was the following summer when Fergus met his death, struck in the left shoulder, as he staggered the death blow came from the butt of an English musket. Long after the spirit of Fergus McGregor was said to return to the site of his old villag searching for his family. The figure of a lone man in Highland battle dress walking over the snow, leaving no footprints as he went. The above tale was told to me in 1994 by American David McGregor which is a tradition in his family. He saw my request in a local Scottish paper and thought I may find his tale interesting. Over the years he has collected a couple of ghost sightings that he says may be of his ancestor Fergus. Was it the spirit of Fergus McGregor that her Eija and her boyfriend came across in the summer of 1972, while on a back packing holiday from Sweden. It was late in the afternoon and they had spent most of the day marveling at the breath taking scenery. Suddenly at about ten yards in front of them, there appeared a man in old type Highland dress. He stood about five feet seven inches tall, had shoulder length sandy coloured hair, tied, "in a very loose pony tail." On his feet he wore a pair of leather sandals, with no socks, the shirt was a thick woven cloth fastened at the front, "with a sort of criss cross type fastening," (again that same description.) Over his shoulder he wore a long plaid fastened with a crudely made bronze brooch, inscribed with writing that Eija could not make out. In his left hand he held a short battle-axe, a dagger protruded from the left hand side of his belt, the hilt was fashioned into a, "kind of head or face." The clansmans kilt was not, "like those you see nowadays, but stopped short well above the knees and had no pleats at all." The tourists later identified the tartan as that belonging to the clan McGregor (!), or as near as they could make out. The Highlander then walked past the startled backpackers, who at first thought they had wandered onto a film set. As he passed, the Highlander turned to look at the couple before disappearing in front of their eyes. Norman McAlistair thinks he also saw the spirit of Fergus, way back in the 1950's. He had stopped to rest his aching feet in a small bothy, whilst out walking one day. Suddenly he fely a cold chill in the air, as he turned he was just in time to see the figure of a young man in Highland battle dress fade away in front of him. I wonder if Fergus McGregor still wanders the site of his old vilage even today, or has he at long last found peace. D. A Mass Of UFO Sightings Alloway, Ayrshire. 21\7\96\...A black oval shaped craft whose centre shone a bright luminous green, streaked across the sky below cloud level. This was over the Auld Kirk and brigadoon in Alloway at around midnight. On the 24\7\96\ the same witness saw at about 22.40hrs a bright light travelling across the sky again below cloud level, this time it disappeared in front of his eyes. He could not make out the shape of the object but states that it was definitely not a shooting star. ~~~~~ 2nd, June 1996: A HIGHLAND UFO. A well known lady whose name I have been asked not to divulge saw a strange sight in the sky on the 2nd of June 1996 in Northern Scotland. As she talked to a friend on the telephone the lady suddenly saw something coming down the valley travelling very slowly. She describes it as being an, "Orange glowing ball, it came level with me then shot up over the mountains and then descended behind them" It seemed as though the 'object' was going to crash and she waited with bated breath for the noise of the impact. None came. All the while she had been giving her friend a running commentary over the telephone. The next day she telephoned the Inverness Police who had actually at the time set up an officer especially to deal with the vast amount of UFO sightings in the area. She then contacted RAF Kinloss and gave them a report which they thanked her for and she thought that was that. Five hours later the witness recieved a telephone call from an officer based at RAF Kinloss. The caller was very interested and wanted to know every minute detail and even wanted to visit the site as soon as possible. The officer the witness states, was quite open and admitted that what she had seen was no meteor, plane or helicopter that they knew of. She also mentioned her sighting in the village the next day, although local newspapers reported only meteor activity. Locals then told her that three months earlier there had been sightings of objects moving down the same valley. As mentioned there has been a great many UFO sightings from the Inverness area, so much so that the Inverness Police HQ assigned an officer to deal with the reports being made. Although when I contacted their press officer I was told there had only been two reports this year, and I quote, "The first was reported at 19.30hrs. on February 19th, 1996 in the Scorgie area of Inverness when a report was made of a bright light in the sky with green 'laser's' coming from it. Further investigations revealed that the light was the planet Venus which was particularly bright at the time." The second report was timed at 15.51hrs. on 26th February of this year at Canal Road, Inverness when a silver\green coloured disc was reported as being seen in the sky above Caley Marina. Scottish Air Traffic Control at Prestwick were informed as a matter of course and it may be that you wish to contact them for further information....." Well I know of at least two other instances when strange lights\craft have been reported to the same constabulary since January. Also from another source, if it is true or not I do not know, RAF Kinloss have requested of the Inverness Police that they report all UFO sightings to them along with all details of the witnesses. As a postscript: The lady on first telling the locals what she saw, was laughed at: Several months after several of them confided in her and told them that they had seen the same object that she saw; and that these things regulary occur. ~~~~~ Haunted Scotland Newsletter: Girdle Toll, near Irvine: Ayrshire A FIERY OBJECT By Mark Fraser While stood in a public telephone box in the small town of Girdle Toll\Irvine in Ayrshire. I saw (Ed) a massive fiery sphere with a long trail of light streak down from the skies heading towards the earth. I actually braced myself for a crash or explosion, so sure was I that the object was that close. The time was apprx 18.20hrs on February 13th 1996. I guessed maybe it had been a large meteorite. Or maybe even the Chinese satellite that was apparently due to fall to earth somewhere around that time. At 8pm the news on Talk Radio mentioned that a mystery object crashed from the sky into a mountain side on the Island of Jura and that a RAF helicopter had been dispatched to the scene, as now the mountain was actually on fire. I only caught the tail end of the news bulletin on West Sound Radio at 9pm but in essence it said that the story of the object crashing was a false alarm, and the flames on the mountain were due to a scrub fire! The next couple of days saw the daily Scottish newspapers awash with similar sightings. In fact Jura resident Kenny miller states that the RAF had helicopters on the scene shortly before the incident. He said, "I saw this strange oval object flying towards the pap of Jura. At first I thought it was a shooting star, but then I realized this was much bigger, about the size of a small plane. It was travelling faster then any plane as if a huge missile had been dropped. It was huge and electric blue in colour." Painter David Moffat saw an 'Orangey" ball of light trailing an orange and red flame over Falkirk. John Gray of Kincardine in Fife describes a fireball blazing above him, with a long tail travelling at a fantastic speed. Two male witnesses in Glasgow also saw the object and they described it as being, "Red and orangey with a blue blaze trailing after it." Cab driver James Hammond froze behind the wheel as straight ahead of him was a blazing white object speeding across the sky. Mr. Hammond states that he never believed in UFO's but this incident has changed his mind. Glasweigan Jeanetta Baxter spotted a huge white shining object, which stayed motionless in the sky for several minutes. John McCaskill was driving home on the Isle of Lewis when a blinding light floated across his rear view mirror, "It wasn't a shooting star," he said..... Still the reports continued... While climbing a peak in Glencoe with friends Adam Drew saw a streak of white light f lash across the sky. He said, "We thought it was a flare and some one might be in trouble. It travelled at an amazing speed without arcing like a flare then shot off in silence." Civil servant David Gribben saw a UFO heading towards Jura as he left Glasgow's Kelvin Hall with two friends. "What we saw looked exactly like something out of a film when an object or space craft re-enters the earth's atmosphere." Mr. Gribben stated. Police were called to Neliston, Mid Lothian after reports of an object crashing into a field. The witness said, "It was massive, about the size of a big house." James Allen was standing in Dalkeith Road, Glasgow, when he saw what he first imagined to be a very big and bright shooting star, which seemed to burn out before it hit the ground. Elizabeth Lahmansi of Edinburgh said, "There was a big star in the sky and it was four or five times as big as that. It was low over the bungalows and travelling in an arcing direction downwards." Donna Rodgers phoned Edinburgh Airport after she saw the object but got a very stony response and it was suggested that she write to air traffic services in Prestwick. Mrs. Irene Brown of Musselburgh saw a very bright light with either vapour or smoke. She watched it through binoculars for about ten minutes. John Reid from Girvan was walking his dog along the beach when he saw the UFO. "It came out of the sky at a really steep angle and was just like a really bright star. I've seen lots of shooting stars but this thing dropped so fast, there was no way it was one of them. I've never seen anything like it." Coast guards at Oban, Argyll reported a large comet-like object with a tail. Even though residents on Jura claim they saw an object crash into a mountain on the island and also that a RAF helicopter had been on the scene prior to the alleged crash, coastguards and RAF claim there was nothing more then a scrub fire. Around 18.30hrs on Tuesday evening, police switchboards were jammed by people reporting the object. In fact it was seen as far away as Inverness and Elgin as one witness states, "It was heading towards Glasgow." The Royal Observatory in Edinburgh suggested the object would have been a meteorite although the civil aviation authority had picked nothing up on radar. Ron Halliday said, "This could have been something from a different dimension. How else can you explain why this never showed up on radar, and how it disappeared without a trace." Malcom Robinson of the then SPI said, "There is no doubt that UFO sightings in Scotland are on the increase and we are investigating the possibility that recent sightings are linked to the Chinese satellite. About 95% of UFO sightings turn out to have a natural explanation, but that still leaves 5% unexplained." He also linked recent sightings with secret government aircraft which Malcom Robinson stated, "The government would be quite happy to hide under the guise of UFO's. Another 'expert' (!) stated that what the hundreds of people saw that night on February 13th was no more then an optical illusion caused by the planet Venus. Let me tell you I saw that object and what a load of rot that last staement is. Although when I saw it I was not put in mind of a space craft of sorts more like a meteor crashing to the earth. Another Fiery Object! A massive sea search was launched on Saturday 26th of October after reports of explosions and objects falling into the sea off the West coast of Scotland. At around 17.00hrs eye witnesses reported seeing the explosion in the sky off the Butt of Lewis. The area is the exact point where transatlantic flights enter British airspace. The RAF could not rule out an air collision and mounted a full search which cost 200,000, but they found nothing, or so the official line says. One eye witness reported a large aircraft and a smaller one collide. Another heard a couple of loud bangs and saw debris falling from the sky. But Air Traffic Control at Prestwick said they had no reports of planes missing. A RAF spokesman from Kinross said, "We have a special unit investigating the matter. One of the things we are looking into is that it is space debris. But we are also searching through all the radar tapes around the time of the incident to see if there is any trace of aircraft. Stornoway Coastguard initially mounted a helicopter sea search but as reports increased a RAF Sea King and a Nimrod joined in. Lochinver Lifeboat was launched and all the shipping alerted in the area. A French fishing boat, at the time off Lewis also headed for the area as did the Port Salvo which usually operated in the Minch. Police and ambulance crews were also standing by at Ness, in case of survivors. Witnesses reported a large pall of smoke out to sea. Another shocked resident said, "It lit up the sky and then fell to the sea. It was like a scene from the X-Files." Norman MacDonald of Skigersta Road said, "When I heard it at first, I thought it was a firework because its not long to Guy Fawkes night. Then I saw a trail of smoke. I saw three flashes in total and heard a further two bangs." "I rushed into the local shop, and took the staff and customers out. They also saw the dense smoke trail going into the sea," The top secret RAF tracking station of Flyingdales in Yorkshire was asked for any information that they may have picked up, but they said they had detected nothing. Flyingdales is equipped with highly sensitive tracking devices which gives warning of any nuclear missile attack on Britain. American military scientists from Sandia National Laboratories, which operate spy satellites from their base in Alburguerque, New Mexico are also interested in the incident and have begun their own investigations. The involvement of the US military has sparked off rumours as the military somehow being involved in the incident although they deny all knowledge of it. Incidentally two days later the same area saw a NATO exercise involving thirty ships and eighty aircraft. Professor Mark Bailey of the Armagh observatory in Northern Ireland admitted he was puzzled and said, "I am torn between this being caused by the military, such as target practice, and a natural phenomena such as a fireball."." The SNP claims it has information that a naval frigate was in the area shortly after the incident lifting wreckage from the sea and Margaret Ewing is being asked to raise the matter in the Commons. Meanwhile Nick Pope has taken an interest in the incident and is carrying out his own investigations saying that he would not rule out the possibility of this being a UFO. ~~~~~ October 1997. Aerial Activity Over Kilmarnock. Tuesday 7\10\97\ Also at 6.45hrs.pm. and three lights. But this time the lights rose from the ground, and travelled across the evening sky. Also Sunday the 5\10\97 strange aerial activity was also reported as lights in the sky. During November bright flashes were observed over several nights in the Ayrshire area. Witnesses first thought them to be lightening. These flashes were also seen in the Irish Sea and over the Isle of White. One female caller in Kilmarnock said that she observed at least two of these flashes lighting up her back garden only! I saw several of them from my place of work in Ardrossan but again put them down to lightening. Dennis Hardley of the Oban UFO Society called to tell me that these flashes were being observed up and down the West coast of Scotland and out to sea. The following is from a lady who wishes to keep her identity a secret; she is genuinely at a loss to explain the following incidents and is looking for some explanation or guidance......can you help, if so write to me and I will pass on the letters. I have enclosed an account of my experiences..........I realise that due to timing and location of the incident, it might be argued that I was merely dreaming. I believe in trusting our own instincts, therefore I KNOW that what happened to me was not a dream. I have told my husband about this incident and was told, "stop being so bloody stupid, it's just a dream". Since then, I have told nobody. If my own husband ridiculed me, strangers wouldn't hesitate either. I do not mind if the contents of this story are made public, but I do NOT want to be identified in anyway. I have written the account in three sections. Each section, I feel, ties in with the others. I'm not sure of the conclusion, (you can make your own) but these incidents have left me with strong feelings that cannot be explained away by the dreaming theory. Now that I have started to talk about it, I would be delighted if you would get back in touch and give me your true opinion on what has happened....... Late Summer 1997. This is the main incident which I spoke to you about on the phone and I'm sorry if I rabble on a bit, but it is so important to me that you understand it. The incident itself was late summer 1997, but the other events that I mention are just approximately round about the same time........Anyway, this night (I was 7 or 8 months pregnant) I became aware that there were tiny old-man type creatures wearing light colours, (I remembered exactly at the time what they were wearing, but it's gone now), surrounding me. One was actually on top of the bed at the back of my head. I couldn't move or speak, it was almost as if I was drugged but my head was clear. I knew that they were trying to get me up but for whatever reason, they were already having some difficulty. I couldn't make a sound, but I was terrified that if they took me, my baby might be hurt. I just knew that I had to stay in my own room or I would loose my baby. I was screaming inside my head over and over for help and would they please, please not take me. I screamed that I was pregnant and begged once more for them to please go away. Suddenly inside my head I heard a man's voice saying, "You're okay, you're okay. Nothing's going to hurt you. Calm down." At the same time, I felt relief wash over me and the men disappeared. When they had left, I was able to move and speak again. I should mention, to be fair, that in the 2-3 weeks leading up to this incident I had been reading about alien abductions and in particular about a woman who had learned how to stop them happening to her. I didn't particularly like this book but I do admit to reading it before this happened. I also, (at the same time more or less), developed a severe fear of the dark, almost like a child's. I nearly wet the bed one night because my husband was out late and I was too scared to go out of the bedroom. After the incident with the little men, I was no longer scared of the dark. It was almost if I realised that when it really mattered, they would leave me alone. I understand that I had been reading books and I was pregnant and I expect that most people will say I was suffering from an overactive imagination due to the worry about giving birth. I dont mind. They weren't there, I WAS. My mother and father are Spiritualist's and although I cannot accept all there believes, I like most of them, so I guess I come under 'Spiritualist' too. I am also interested in UFO's and other paranormal events. I have had some psychic experiences and my father is a very good Spiritual Healer. I had tried to heal in the past and nothing ever happened. After the incident in early summer 1997, my father, when I told him about it, suggested that it may be something called 'astral travel'. I dont know, you can make up your own mind on that one. All I know is that after, when I tried again, (at my father's suggestion), to heal, I could do it. I feel I should also mention, although I dont know how relevant it is, that in the house where this all happened, there was a mirror on the living room wall that was normal when you looked into it, but when you caught sight of it from the corner of your eye there were black shapes, (sorry, best can describe it), moving about in it, (or moving about the room but only visible in the mirror) If I read this back, I will loose the courage to send it to you, because I know it sounds crazy at the very least, so please excuse any spelling\ grammer mistakes. I would be interested to know if the area that I lived in was a particular 'hotspot' and if so, how far out it extends. Although I have since moved house. In fact I would appreciate any honest feedback. If you could come up with an explanation I would be glad to hear it. Even if you think this is mad stuff, please tell me. Summer 1998. At work one day I was doing an analysis called WaterCo2. These are done to a strict timetable, (which actually had been written down by the senior technician at that time) therefore you knew in advance, how many analyses could be fitted into the day and when it would be possible to fit in a food or coffee break. The lab in which these analyses are done, also has glass-bead-making furnaces in it and due to the heat, this door is always kept open through the day. The lab is off the main corridor so many people would pass this lab during the day, some stopping to say hello or whatever. The point is that when you are working in this room, there was NO privacy. Everyone who passed could see exactly what was going on. This day, I had arranged to meet my mother and sister for lunch at 12.30........I was doing the analysis according to the timetable and at 10am I went for a 15 minute coffee break in the staff room, where I met up with the rest of the technicians. Everything normal so far. At 11.30 I needed a cold drink and after putting on another sample, I headed down to the staff-room at 11.37 to take a quick swig from a bottle of coke that was in the fridge. When I got down to the staff-room, several of my colleagues were there. I was surprised because lunch time was 12.30. I asked if they were having a meeting of some kind and was told that no, they weren't, it was lunchtime. I looked at my watch and sure enough it was 12.40. According to the work that I completed while following the written timetable it should only have been 11.40am. I panicked because I was due to meet my mother. I went back upstairs to quickly take off the current sample and then headed down to meet my mother. I told her what happened and she suggested that I see the doctor. I did this and was sent for an EEG because my father suffers from epilepsy. My results came back normal. The doctor thought that perhaps I'd suffered a 'ptit mal' seizure. He did agree that it was almost unheard of for these type of seizures to last for more than a few minutes. The conclusion of this section is that on this particular day, I did the work that I was supposed to and in the time-scale that I was supposed to do it in. Then, at 11.40 (ish) something happened to me for a whole hour that made me stop work. I know that if I had fallen asleep or was suffering from any other type of blackout or other medical disorder, I would have been in plain sight of at least approximately 20-30 people who would have passed by this room with the door wide open and saw what was happening. I know falling asleep at work is a laughable thing in some workplaces and you would normally just be left alone until the boss caught you, but in a chemical lab NOBODY would have left me just sitting there. It is too dangerous. I have no other memory of this incident. I was working as normal, left the lab for a few minutes to take a drink at 11.30 and arrived downstairs, (one flight) one hour later. Early Summer 1997. I wake up in the middle of the night and find I am not in my bed. At first I think 'beach' because there is a sandy type stuff under my (bare) feet and an ocean in front of me. Then I look at the water and realise that there are no waves so then think 'moon'. I then have another 'thought' come to me which makes me think that I am actually on a planet very far away. The terrain is familiar but so 'alien'. The water in front of me isn't just free of waves, it is COMPLETELY still, almost as if is actually a much denser liquid than water. And it is neither light nor dark so I cant see the true colour of this 'water' either. I know I'm not dreaming because I can feel the sand, the cool air and I can actually hear the silence. Also, I have no clothes on, which is how I sleep and I dont tend to suffer from the 'naked' in public dream. I take all this in and enjoy the feeling of total peace, contentment, fulfilment, (I dont know the correct word to express it). I'm alone here and totally enjoying it. After a while just standing looking about, I begin to think consciously about where I am. I start to think along the lines of, "If I dont know where I am, how will I get back home ?" As soon as I have completed this thought. I am back in my bed, sitting up wide awake...........This one in particular needs to be told and not written as I cant express the strangeness and the beauty and peace of this place, nor the time and consequences of my thought's. ~~~~~ June 1997: Dundonald, Ayrshire: About a dozen people watched a strange spectacle over Dundonald at around the end of June. For about two hours an unidentified flying object appeared to drift over several houses. At first the object seemed to be elliptical and was about the size of a large radar satellite dish. There seemed to be 14 or 15 flashing lights underneath it as the object drifted over houses in Auchans Drive and Cochrane Avenue. People watched it from around 11.20pm to 1.20am. At times it seemed to change its shape to resemble a large letter 'M'. The object often changed altitude to just over the roof tops and at other times at a very high altitude. Some witnesses were genuinely afraid others were astounded. Debbie McNally described the thing, "as a series of circles, giving off lights and rotating." Residents in the area also believed that the UFO caused their light bulbs to blow. The Kilmarnock Standard put forward the explanation that it could have been a Gegenschein, although it is very rarely seen as far North as Scotland. It appears in the sky, exactly opposite the sun, after sunset and is caused by dust in the atmosphere. That dust, says the Standard could have come from the volcano in Montserrat and the flashing lights could have been stars! On June the 27th members of the Ralston family from Saltcoats saw something strange over Dundonald, " which kept disappearing and coming back." By the time Mr. Ralston was back home in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, they saw, "three layers of electric blue triangles inside an oval shape which hovered just above the rooftops, tilting on its side. It would disappear for a few seconds and come back lower down in the sky. This lasted up to one hour and then it disappeared. It was very frightening. Philippa Knapp also saw something strange over Dundonald the same night. She said: "My husband, son and friend and I all saw it. My husband referred to them as lights but my son and myself thought they were more like a cloud type substance of a purple shade, small circles rotating forming a larger circle. We watched it come towards us over the rooftops in Castleview from the South-West direction. As it got close to us it changed shape, swirled to its right then left and disappeared, but two or three minutes later, exactly the same format took place. We observed it for over an hour from about 11.35. Local residents who witnessed the objects have rejected the Gegenschein theory out of hand. More light bulbs in the area have blown and there is an upsurge in failing electrical appliances. Debbie McNally, using her sisters camera took a photo of the 'thing'. Every frame on the camera when developed turned out fine but the one showing the mystery object turned out blank. In the last week there has been a sighting of a triangle object over Kilmarnock, the person making the report is an amateur astronomer and he described it as 'sinister'. He said: "It was a large object and it rose above houses at around 2.am., than slowly flew off over London Road. The object was kite shaped with three or four white lights around the edges and a flashing red light in the centre." The witness thought the object was on the "prowl". Half an hour after the sighting he saw lightening in the sky, which he thought odd as it was a clear night. ~~~~~ Those Blessed UFO's. Ayrshire recently experienced another mini flap of UFO sightings, in fact the activity on the West Coast of Scotland becomes quite intense at times, but it is overlooked by others in various parts of Scotland as they like to believe that their area is the only one that experiences this kind of phenomena in abundance. Saturday 10th of May, 1977, Air Traffic controllers at Prestwick Airport received dozens of telephone calls from members of the public who had strange aerial sightings to report. Among the callers were members of a 999 emergency crew. The met office in Glasgow also received reports. A 'strange' object was seen over Dundonald for several hours from about 9pm onwards, astronomers said that what they were seeing was the comet Hale Bopp, although the witnesses scoff at this suggestion and remain adamant that what they saw was no comet. Colin Chisholm of Bellfield in Kilmarnock, along with his wife saw the object from their balcony of their flat just after 11pm. Colin said, "What we saw was not Hale Bopp, the object we were watching was actually changing colour from red to green and then white and was very bright. It was also in the skies to the West and not the North, as Hale Bopp. I've never seen a star behaving like that." "When we first looked out of the window we could see very bright coloured lights. It stayed in a fixed position for quite a time and then started moving away." Later at 11.55pm Colin Chisholm also saw a bright red triangular object shoot across the sky. Craig Stewart from the Bellfield area of Kilmarnock, (See the letters page.) told the Ayrshire Leader that in no way was the main object Hale Bopp, "I called Prestwick Airport and they said they had a number of calls about the same sighting. I saw two little red objects shoot off from from it." Craig adds, "While I was talking to Prestwick Air Traffic Control I told them I could see a plane passing the object, and they said they could see the plane but nothing else on their radar." The object was actually filmed and a copy acquired by the Ayrshire Leader who said, "When seen on camara, the dot of light appeared as two horizontal dots which gradually descended together around Dundonald Hill before gradually moving away into the distance." 11 year old Craig Kennedy from the Hurlford area saw lights over Bellfield, he said they were changing from red to green to blue, with a very bright white light above them. In fact many people around Ayrshire telephoned Prestwick Airport, the Ayshire Leader and even myself in regards to the sightings: An anonymous caller from Ayr said, "there were red, green, and white lights. There was also loud bangs like gunfire and the whole thing was like an incredible fire-work display. Mauren and Andrew Gulbus of the Belmont area of Ayr saw a spotlight in the sky with blue and white lights on either side, Andrew joked that it must be a Rangers UFO. 11 year old Lucia Mezzullo from Ayr saw a triangular shaped object over the Centrum Ice Arena. She said, 'It was green, red, blue and white with a light in the middle. I went to get my parents but by the time I got back it wasn't there. Another anonymous witess in loans said she saw the object over Dundonald, "It remained stationary for some time but it wasn't a plane, and everybody has been talking about the Hale Bopp comet having a tail, but there was definitely no tail so this was no comet." The Ayrshire Leader also recieved a mysterious telephone call from a chap claiming that 20 years ago a fleet of UFO's appeared over the Air Traffic Control Centre in Prestwick, he said, "Everyone who saw the UFO's were ushered into a room and made to sign the Official Secrets Act. The incident is now code-named ANGELS." Now the Explanations! Roderick McCafferty of Kilwinning said, "I believe a man was arrested a couple of months ago for messing about with disco lights. The lights have a range of miles and they can be made to look bigger or smaller and swirl around. A caller from Dundonald who said she was interested in the UFO phenomena claimed that the lights were nothing more then Dundonald Castle lit up!!!!! Venus on a shopping trip to Kilmarnock via Dundonald. Steuart Campbell in a micro-light looking for Nessie. Another explanation was that the sightings were caused by a giant firework display at Newark Castle, Alloway. Although the displays organiser stated that most of the sightings occurred Northwards of the site as far away as Dundonald. (I was actually at Alloway that night and didn't even see the firework display!) David Scott of Kilwinning believes the Territorial Army were up at Auchan House firing guns and setting off coloured flares, he said it goes on all hours of the night and he said they use red, green and white flares. A spokesperson for the Royal Highland Fusiliers based in Ayr, said there had been no exercise at that time. (and besides if you have ever been in that situation yourself you will know that flares and thunderflashes will not cause the effects that the witnesses reported.) A photograph was taken by David Workman of Troon, Ayrshire, in August 1996. As he snapped away to use up the last few remaining frames in his camera he was amazed to see this white circular orb when the prints came back from the developers. He had not noticed anything unusual when he had taken the photograph. It was not the first time that David has been privy to unusual phenomena in the area. He said of a previous UFO sighting, "I was crossing Central Avenue into West Crescent, Troon, when I noticed a small white light moving down the road towards me. It resembled a slow moving flare and was skimming through the air about 30ft above the road. It passed above me and headed towards the playing fields, but vanished a few seconds later. I saw the second light half an hour after that. I was at my sisters house in West Crescent, standing in the back garden which looks onto the field. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a light zig-zagging above the houses. It was very large, maybe 40ft in diameter, and like the first was white in colour. I watched for only a few seconds before it vanished. I estimated it to be 1500ft up but it was probably lower, 500 - 1000ft." The speed of the object David found difficult to estimate but guesses around 10 to 15mph, it made no sound at all and thought maybe it was some kind of electrical phenomena, maybe ball lightening. The object left a light trail behind it, "Like a cigarette would in the dark. This sighting occurred on Wednesday 1\5\96\ at apprx 10.15pm. It was a cold night with light cloud and a full moon.........three months or so before the above photograph was taken. ~~~~~ Haunted Scotland Issue 6. Dear HS, Did you see the beautiful sky on Tuesday evening (27\5\97\) About 11.30, it was almost glowing, almost fluorescent. I did not notice it until that time, but it was so beautiful I went outside to look at it. The sky was obviously, evenly, overcast, but the haze must have been high up. It was not like a dull wet night when the town's lights are reflected in the clouds. In fact, where the 'edge' of the sky came, it was nearer dark clouds, and sometimes a few lower, greyish clouds blew across in the East - South East, and it was dark in the North West. It was not the moon behind the clouds, because that would have been in one place. It was quite mild and windy. The sky was a fascinating pinky-orange glow. I watched it until midnight, then went to bed, but even then the little bit of sky I could see was pretty. Last night there was no sign of such a pretty sight. I wanted to phone my family to tell them to look, but thought they would have all been asleep. This fantastic glow was all over the upper part of the sky only, but it had no movement, unlike the Northern Lights. I wondered if it was just over Kilmarnock, or anywhere else. I have not seen anything quite like it before. Do you know what would cause this natural phenomena ? Who would know, or who could I find out from. Do the weather at Prestwick record anything like that ? Do any readers of Haunted Scotland have an explanation. Mrs. McKechnie: Kilmarnock ~~~~~ Issue Eight Haunted Scotland. Dear HS, I was interested to read in issue 6 of Haunted Scotland the rash of reports reported in May, in the Ayrshire area, especially the witness who mentioned hearing loud bangs. This sounds very similiar to something I saw a few months ago (I don't know the exact date but it may easily have been at the same time as these sightings.) I was walking the dogs late at night (Either a Friday or Saturday.) when there was a flash in the sky off to the side of my field of view. I turned to look and heard a sound like a gunshot. A few seconds later I saw another flash but since I was now facing in the right direction I saw it clearly. It was like a large slow motion explosion of white light which expanded then retracted. At its fullest it looked like a large white ball with a fuzzy halo. It was directly above Marr College in Troon, and was about the size of a full moon or larger. Then a few seconds later there was another gunshot sound. The sounds made me think it must be someone firing a flare gun or fireworks although the light was very large. Fot this reason I never bothered to report it but when I read your article and your request for other witnesses I decided to write. I agree with you what you said about the increased UFO activity in the area recently and I have been lucky enough to have had several good sightings in the last few years. (See issue seven of Haunted Scotland.) I'm not so sure about this one though. It could well be a man-made event. None of my previous sightings had any sounds associated with them although some did include white lights. David Workman. Troon, Ayrshire. ~~~~~ Sunday evening, 21st February 1999.........These flashes were reported over Ayrshire, from Kilmarnock to Ardrossan. The towns are 15 miles apart and were seen over both towns at the same time by two people who on the telephone to each other. The first reported flashes were around 18.00hrs, until 22.00hrs. One male head loud bangs in Kilmarnock at 21.58hrs straigt after one flash. I also saw several of these flashes and would describe them as bright blue in colour\ while others were brilliant white.......... lighting the whole sky, somewhat akin to a camera flash. Thunder & lightening........!?! Strange lights were also seen over Fenwick recently which I am at the moment looking into and will give you more details in the next issue. ~~~~~ Strange Goings-On. Something strange seems to have been going on in the sky over Fenick at the weekend. Odd lights were seen in the sky over the village late Saturday night. The lights were like lightening, but there was only a thin cloud over. Then again on Sunday night, something similar was seen, again over Fenick, and this time the sky was clear. With reference to the article on lights over Fenwick in the Pat Roller page in the Standard, perhaps they were the Northern Lights. Every night I look out to see if I can see them. I really would love to see them once more. On Sunday at 9pm I was closing my gates and thought it was just the night to see the Northern Lights. But when you look you can only see a reflection of the street lights. I do know that there have been strange lights over Fenwick before. I really would like an explanation, perhaps someone could write to the paper if they know the answer. Elederly reader - Kilmarnock Standard Letters Page.
