Does anyone else remember an exquisite British film made about 1947 called
"Passage to Pimlico"? The plot, IIRC, involved the discovery that a royal
grant of independence had been given to one small borough in London several
centuries ago... Can't remember anything more about the film, except that it
was one of a series of very low-budget comedies, mostly VERY satirical, done
by British studios immediately after WW2. Another of the same group was
"Tight Little island", about the efforts of the inhabitants of a Scottish
island to evade excise taxes on their only exportable product, Scotch
whiskey, and the effects of these efforts on the British soldiers sent in to
secure the distillery and the whiskey for the Crown.
