There have been a number of recent developments in House and Senate races.
In the Minnesota Senate race, former (1983-94) Democratic congressman Tim
Penny has filed a statement of candidacy and is expected to make a formal
announcement shortly. There are now eight Democrats competing for the right
to challenge freshman Republican Rod Grams. The others are wealthy trial
lawyer Michael Ciresi; state Senators Steve Kelley and Jerry Jazenich; former
U.S. Attorney David Lillehaug; University of Minnesota physician Steven
Miles; former state community development official Rebecca Yanisch; and
perennial candidates Dick Franson and Ole Savior. Penny and Ciresi are
regarded as the frontrunners.
In Pennsylvania, on the other hand, the field of Democratic Senate candidates
got smaller as former one-term congresswoman Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky
("MMM") dropped out. The three leading candidates for the nomination are
Pittsburgh-area Congressman Ron Klink, state Senator Allyson Schwartz and
former Labor Secretary Tom Foley. Also in the field are attorneys Robert
Rovner and Murray Levin. The incumbent they're lining up to challenge is
freshman Rick Santorum.
In the House, former state Senate president, 1994 gubernatorial hopeful and
investment banker Ander Crenshaw is being labeled the likely successor to
retiring Congresswoman Tillie Fowler in Florida's 4th District. Both Fowler
and Crenshaw are Republicans.
In Virginia's 2d District, where Democrat Owen Pickett is retiring, the
candidate field seems to have narrowed to one: Republican state Senator Ed
Schrock. No Democrat has announced and every current and former Democratic
officeholder who's been approached has declined the honor.
In the next-door 1st District, which Republican Herb Bateman is vacating, two
Republicans have announced: state Secretary of Commerce and Trade Barry
DuVal and state Delegate Jo Ann Davis. No Democrat has entered the lists to
date.
