WASHINGTON POSTWASHINGTON, April 2 — Perhaps it is the way his rhetoric
soars, sometimes brilliantly, in his staff-prepared speeches, then
disintegrates into mangled syntax and malapropisms when he deviates from
text. Just days ago, ad-libbing his way through an education speech, George
 W. Bush vowed to remove the federal “cuff link” that stymies local control of
 schools. >>

What does it matter? I'll admit the Republican Party would have done better
to be running St. Carlton of Heston. The actors can do their lines
beautifully. Ronald Reagan did a wonderful and even convincing job of
speaking to the nation. That he also slept through meetings and was casually
unconcerned about national issues was okay. His handlers told him what to do
and what to say and when to say it. Shrub won't be running the country. It
is unfortunate that he cannot perform his part very well, but he will just be
sitting around the White House waiting for his handlers to deliver his
orders. A lot of them will be coming from his mom and dad, so if you liked
the Bush years, you will be very happy with Dubya as our president. No one
really expects Dubya to run anything. He doesn't really have much interest,
and he certainly doesn't have the ability. He does, however, know how to
follow orders; and you all know what happened to Richard Nixon. It wasn't
the Dems who booted Nixon. It was his very, very conservative fellows, when
he began to develop a mind of his own. That won't happen again. They did an
excellent job of making an example of him. Prudy
