Here in Austin, where we have the Republican Candidate for President of the United Corporations of America, we will be going on a hunger strike beginning on July 4 and continuing indefinatly. We are striking for dialogue in our communities, media, public officials and legislature, on the topic of the drug war. This is an unofficial announcement, and you can expect to see more formal announcements as we get closer to the actual date of the strike.
So far, strikers will be Zeal Stefanoff of San Marcos, Brian ?? of Hemp Advocates of the University of Texas and I, Tracey Hayes. I am confident more will join us as we get the word out.
We will need lots of support groups, both locally and internationally to help bring media attention to this action.
We will be striking on the capitol steps, 24 hours, without leaving except to use the bathrooms inside of the capitol building.
We invite any and all interested people to come to Texas and join us on the capitol steps in our effort to make sure that the possible president of this nation understands that we will not continue this war to profits from the sales and distribution of certain substances.
If anyone wants to participate, but can't make it to Texas, please join us in organizing your own local hunger strike location, or support us by wearing green arm bands every day that strikers are still sitting at the steps of the capitol building.

Thousands of people from all walks of life will join together for a march to the state capitol next Saturday, where there will be a demonstration for the acceptance of medical marijuana at the steps of the capitol building in Lansing on May 6, 2000. The sponsoring organization is Cures Not Wars, which organizes simultaneous marches in over a hundred locations all over the world for the first Saturday in May.
"As the War On Drugs has escalated, many truly innocent people have been affected in tragic ways; these tragedies have served increase support for the movement to end the current substance abuse policy. We would like to see a move toward a policy that helps people and diminishes drug abuse instead of exacerbating it. The Millenium Marijuana March gives the public an opportunity to become better informed on these issues.", said the MMMarch Organizer and Michigan Cures not Wars spokesperson Kathy Kennedy. The march in Lansing will begin at 11 AM at Olds Park, proceed to the Capitol Building to hear speakers on the Capitol steps at noon, and disperse at 2 PM for a block party on Washington Square, ending at 5 PM. The march is intended as a show of solidarity for by people who know about the life-saving benefits of medical marijuana. Tommy Chong, of Cheech and Chong fame, will be in town performing that night, and is invited to participate in the parade.
City and State officials, with the cooperation of local businesses, have granted parade and rally permits to the group, and will close off Michigan Avenue for the duration of the march. "Despite the controversial nature of medical marijuana, or maybe because of it, the government is duty bound to give these peaceful demonstrators their day in the sun. That's the law in America, and that's why reformers in our great country can work within our system without resorting more desperate measures. Our system can work if we have the political will to make it work. It's our government-it's not our master! Besides, there are darn few people in government, business, or the media these days who can honestly swear they have never smoked pot. The time has come to stop pretending.", said Saginaw Attorney Gregory Carl Schmid, a keynote speaker at the event and the Author and Director of the Michigan Personal Responsibility Amendment Initiative. "PRA will bring peace with honor in the war on drugs by repealing 60 year old prohibition laws against compassionate medical and adult responsible use of marijuana away from kids, cars, and the public. PRA will end the asset forfeiture nightmare by earmarking drug, alcohol, and gambling related forfeitures for voluntary education and treatment programs. Forfeiture money should be used on education, which is the key to preventing drug abuse. Police can get all the money they need from the government appropriations process, and should not have access to forfeiture funds as an unaccountable "collars for dollars" incentive program." said Schmid.
Also speaking at the March will be George Griffith and Renee Emory Wolfe, the M.S. sufferer who once received medical marijuana legally as part of a pilot study in Michigan in the eighties, when Senator (now Governor) Engler was spearheading a popular legislative initiative to get the federal government to legalize marijuana for all its medical benefits. She gained the national spotlight last year when she smoked marijuana in a congressman's office in Washington D.C. She was convicted in a week long trial on a possession charge this winter, and received a token $50 fine from the trial judge who said, "If the purpose of this trial was to educate, then consider me educated". "This kind of enlightened thinking is why Marijuana prohibition is about to be thrown on the ash heap of history, where it will be remembered as the 'McCarthyism of the 90's'!", said Schmid.
