=========================== The Committee for National Solidarity Tolstojeva 34, 11000 Belgrade, YU Can Clinton Keep the Balkans from Exploding Long Enough to Get Gore Elected? KFOR NEVER Seems to Find Those who Kill and Maim Serbs By: Mary Mostert, Analyst, Original Sources (www.originalsources.com) June 23, 2000 Don't be surprised if you wake up one morning and hear that all-out war has broken out again in the Balkans. The situation there seems to be deteriorating rapidly. Yesterday I received five separate reports on the rising fragility of the "peace" of the area which gave me five separate pieces of the Balkan puzzle by those on or near the scene. The first report I received was the daily official KFOR Press Update, delivered from Pristina by Major Scott A. Slaten, KFOR Spokesman, which was entitled, "KFOR and UNMIK attacked in Mitrovica" It began: Yesterday afternoon, a protest in northern Mitrovica left two Serbs wounded and one International worker injured when angry Serb residents clashed with KFOR troops and UNMIK Police. The situation began to intensify around 11:45 a.m. when local Serbs began to throw stones at KFOR vehicles escorting a water truck that was driven by a Kosovo Albanian. Later, UNMIK Police attempted to arrest some of the people involved in the stoning. The crowd turned on the UNMIK Police Officers and a UNMIK Police vehicle was set on fire. KFOR Mechanized Battalion soldiers responded to the situation in order to assist the Police Officers and were forced to fire warning shots in the air. >From that report one would assume that, for no reason whatever, a bunch of rowdy Serbs jumped armed KFOR soldiers, when they were peacefully escorting an innocent Albanian truck driver through the area where they were congregated.. Reading on, near the end of the press release was an apparent afterthought for KFOR which read: Just after midnight, KFOR Task Force Sauro soldiers reported they heard nine big explosions coming from an area between the KFOR checkpoint and the orthodox monastery. KFOR and UNMIK are currently investigating. In months of reading these reports, I've learned that when it says "KFOR and UNMIK are currently investigating" that is pretty much the end of the story. I don't remember ever reading an update that says, "Oh, and by the way, we found out who blew up an Orthodox church last night and we've arrested the Albanians who did it AND THEY ARE IN JAIL. No, indeedy. They NEVER seem to find the scoundrels that have been responsible for killing Serbs and other minorities, or who have blown up Churches or set fire to Serb homes. I wonder if KFOR ever actually look for them. Later in the morning I received an e-mail from Tika, who has a contact in Kosovska Mitrovica who told the same story, based on her firsthand report of the incident, as follows: "On June 21, 2000 at around 9:30AM, local time, a few stones were thrown on cars with Albanians, defiantly parading in the heart of the north, Serb section of Kosovska Mitrovica, escorted by KFOR. In minutes, a dozen of UNMIK police cars, manned by the American "peace officers", arrived on the scene at Anke Spajica Street. A bunch of them jumped off the vehicles and stormed the first group of the Serbs they saw. The target was a group of young men standing in front of a shop. With a threatening posture, the policemen approached the men and asked them to identify the perpetrators"( in stoning the Albanian vehicles). The men could not tell, since they did not see them. But, the US police pressed hard and tried to drag some of them into their vehicles. The other present Serbs rushed to defend the victim from the violent US barbarians, who then responded with the acclaimed brutality, euphemistically called in the US "a legal measure against those who resist arrest"- billy clubs. The scuffle developed into a street battle, when the U.S. police called in reinforcements. The end result, Tika's report said, was "twenty Serb civilians injured, two with gunshots, the rest severely beaten up, five with serious head injuries, many blinded with pepper spray, and other US made 'harmless' chemicals. The third report of the same incident was in www.serbia-info.com from Belgrade. It was not the lead story. The lead story, entitled "Mortar Attack on the Monastery of Decani," was all about that one sentence, off-hand, buried story from KFOR about "nine big explosions" which KFOR didn't seem much interested in. Serbia-info (at http://www.serbia-info.com/news/2000-06/22/19605.html) reported: Belgrade, June 22 (Tanjug) - At least six grenades fell on the property of the Monastery of Decani near the church, between midnight and 1.00 a.m., Serbian Orthodox Church Information Department stated today. The monks think this was an action carried out by ethnic Albanian extremists who are dissatisfied with the monastery's reaction to the illegal felling of trees and the abuse of the monastery property, as well as with the U.N. Mission decision. The statement says that the local U.N. administrator for the town of Pec Allen de Rois decided yesterday that the Italian firm, which has started works on water-supply system on the monastery property without the monastery approval, would urgently suspend the works, while ethnic Albanians were told to return the pine-wood, which they were cutting down without control, to the monastery. This was the second mortar attack on the monastery over the last six months, which clearly shows that local ethnic Albanian authorities in Decani do not want to reconstruct beekeeper cooperatives or to construct a water tower, but to expel the monks from the area, it is stressed in the statement. Bombing Serbian churches and monasteries in Kosovo isn't even worth mentioning on network news in America these days. Who really cares if all those old 14th and 15th century works of art and architecture are blown up? I thought maybe the liberal media might get upset about the trees being chopped down, but so far that hasn't happened either. However, Serbia-info also provided what has become something of a routine listing of the dead and the injured Serbs in the continuing terrorist attacks in United Nations and NATO occupied Kosovo. It read: 19 Serbs are injured in Kosovska Mitrovica, and was accompanied by a picture of two "American KFOR Soldiers" wading into a group of Serbs, arms swinging. The Serbs in the picture appear to simply be standing there - no one was in a defensive or a fighting position. The report read: Kosovska Mitrovica, 21 June (Tanjug) - Members of Kfor force injured and hurt 19 Serbs in today's disorders, which broke out in the northern, Serb part of the city of Kosovska Mitrovica, in which UNMIK policemen tried to take into one ethnic Albanian. That "illegal resident" entered in Serb part of Kosovska Mitrovica concealed in a vehicle - water tank, with UNHCR markings (UN High Commissariat for Refugees), which arrived escorted by American members of UNMIK police. In that tank, instead of water, was the ethnic Albanian, who Serbs recognized in the street, and reacted on that provocation of the international forces coming out into the streets. Director's deputy of the hospital in Kosovska Mitrovica DR. Milan Ivanovic stated that there were 19 patients treated in the health-care facility, (one a child) which got injured by UN police, in other words from Americans, who were firing at them, beating with nightsticks and spraying them with tear-gas. According to eyewitnesses, a member of UNMIK police even fired from his vehicle, which was moving along the street Rudarske cete at citizens who were peacefully moving along that street. "Two citizens were injured by firearms, one of them is in operating room, and the other, bullet only grazed his right hand", said DR. Ivanovic. DR. Ivanovic stated precisely that five patients are taken care of in surgery. Others who are injured demanded medical help, because they have burns on their face from sprays with tear-gas and also injuries from nightsticks. "I was witness when American UNMIK police at the bridge, after the crowd which was calming down, took out his gun and pointed it at Serbs who were standing at the Serb side of Ibar", confirmed DR. Ivanovic. Negotiations, concerning releasing Goran Lazic, who UNMIK police detained in today's incident, are in progress. Serbia-info.com reported that Lazic, who was arrested by UNMIK police and KFOR "without any reason in Kosovska Mitrovica, today, was released tonight..." Another reader, Paul, sent me a CNS article entitled "Macedonia Destabilization Threat Causes Concern" which starts: Ethnic Albanians from Albania and Kosovo are involved in attempts to infiltrate and destabilize the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), according to press reports from Skopje, the capital of the small Balkan country. Should the situation get out of hand, observers fear, it could lead to yet another open conflict in the powderkeg region still trying to recover from last year's Kosovo flare-up. A Greek member of the European Parliament, Yiannis Souladakis, told reporters here that the groups involved originated from Kosovo and were linked to the Kosovo Liberation Army. The KLA was ostensibly disbanded last September and reconstituted as the NATO-approved, purely civilian Kosovo Protection Corps. Souladakis said the infiltrators were 'involved in drug-trafficking, illegal arms and women trade, while lately...attempting to acquire a political character.' Souladakis appealed for stability, peace and security to be safeguarded in FYROM. Given the fact that administrative bodies in Kosovo were responsible for their actions to the European Union, Souladakis called for EU bodies to state the steps they intend to take to stop the destabilization attempts." FYROM, a poor landlocked country of two million people which is about the size of Vermont has less population , about 25% of whom are Albanian, than Oklahoma. It broke away from Yugoslavia in 1991and was admitted to the United Nations as a member in 1993. However, the KLA distributed maps to the media in February 1999 which showed much of FYROM, including its capitol city of Skopje, as well as all of Kosovo and a bit of Montenegro part of the "New Albania." They are a very successful terrorist group, having managed to get the unquestioning support of the USA and NATO to do its bidding and drop bombs on its enemies. The frustration level seems to be rising in the Balkans to a near boiling point. The one-sided support of the Albanian terrorists by NATO and the Clinton Administration is, of course, understandable since admitting the KLA ARE drug-dealing, white slavers would tarnish their hoped for image that they bombed Yugoslavia for "humanitarian" reasons. However, the destruction of Yugoslavia and the continuing sanctions to prevent it from re-building insisted upon by Clinton is making recovery of the region nearly impossible - especially when the KLA continues to disrupt the area with murders, drug-dealing and prostitution rings. Based on those "Greater Albania" maps that are obviously blue-prints for more KLA "liberation" of other people's lands and houses, and the obvious inability of UNMIK and KFOR to control the KLA's lucrative, if illegal, businesses, it may turn out to be really difficult for Clinton to keep a lid on it until after the November election.
