BRUNO: HILL DUG UP NEW DIRT ON GIULIANI

Hillary Clinton's campaign is behind the negative bombshells in
two new books about Mayor Giuliani, State Senate Majority Leader
Joseph Bruno suggested yesterday.
"It's kind of interesting in terms of timing," Bruno told Albany
radio station WROW.
"A bright and very informed person shared a theory with me ...
that a lot of this was negative material that had been prepared
by the Hillary people, and they were prepared to use this
negative campaigning if Giuliani was indeed the nominee.
"It's now being leaked so that they slow down the mayor and maybe
some of it rolls over to the Republican structure generally. Why
does it come out now, and why doesn't it come out a year ago, two
years ago?"
The two books, "Rudy Giuliani: Emperor of the City" by New York 1
reporter Andrew Kirtzman and "Rudy! An Investigative Biography of
Rudolph Giuliani" by Village Voice reporter Wayne Barrett, hit
stores this week.
Both contain stunning new information, from the 1934 criminal
record of Giuliani's father to an allegation that former mayoral
press secretary Cristyne Lategano-Nicholas wanted to leak rumors
about Ed Koch's sex life in 1996.
Giuliani declined to blame Mrs. Clinton or the White House,
saying he had "no idea" who provided material to the authors.
Howard Wolfson, the Clinton campaign spokesman, said Bruno didn't
know what he was talking about.
"Call me when he offers some proof," Wolfson said. "He's not
going to offer any proof, because it's not true ... Why would we
have this information?"
Kirtzman chuckled when The Post told him of Bruno's charges.
"The vast majority of my sources not only don't come from the
Hillary Clinton camp, they come from the Giuliani camp," Kirtzman
said.
Barrett ridiculed Bruno by saying, "It wasn't only Don Imus who
fell off a horse. I never talked to them [the Clinton people]
about Rudy Giuliani."
Barrett readily admits that four individuals and foundations,
some with close Democratic Party ties, such as Bill Moyers,
provided funding for his researchers.
"They understood who I am, my kind of journalism ... " he said.
Giuliani disclosed yesterday that he had called Koch to deny a
report in Kirtzman's book that Lategano-Nicholas tried to smear
the ex-mayor four years ago by leaking rumors to the press that
he's homosexual.
"There is not a single bit of truth to it," Giuliani said. "It is
a total, absolute falsity."
Koch told The Post he accepted Giuliani's words at face value, as
well as those of Lategano-Nicholas, who also called him over the
weekend.
Meanwhile, without specifically addressing his father's criminal
past, Giuliani asserted that any large family has a few skeletons
in its closet.
"It's very hard to find a very large family in America that
doesn't have somebody involved in criminality ... " the mayor
said.
