Be warned! When you hear a politician say " Let's put the past
behind us and look forward to..." You are actually listening to
an attempt to cover up a crime.

Pinochet in 'forget the past' plea
ITN Network
Former Chilean President General Augusto Pinochet has appealed to
his nation on its National Unity Day that all Chileans should forget
the past and work towards a common future.
"I would like to express to each man and woman in my beloved country
that I hold in my heart the firm hope that our divisions and pain
of the past can be overcome by looking to the future for the good
of the next generations,"
his granddaughter, Maria Jose Martinez read in a statement.
The statement was part National Unity Day celebrations and was
written by the 84-year-old general to encourage the reunion of
those that supported and those that rejected his regime.
"With the conviction of always having wanted what was the best for
my country, with all humility I ask God that he give my compatriots
the knowledge necessary to overcome the conflicts of yesterday and
contribute to a future of peace, unity, and progress.
"Making sure that the work done with so much effort and sacrifice
of all Chileans is not put at risk, but endures and is consolidated
with time.
Long live Chile!" Martinez read, accompanied by Pinochet and his
wife, Lucia Hiriart at their home.
Supporters of murdered former President Salvador Allende, families
of the detained and disappeared, and family of fallen soldiers also
marked the holiday with memorials.
The holiday was created by former President Eduardo Frei to replace
September 11th as the national holiday. That date marks the start
of the military coup that put Pinochet in power.
Pinochet ruled Chile with an iron fist from 1973-1990 and was
granted immunity from prosecution for crimes committed by his regime
because of his seat in the senate.
But he was stripped of that immunity by the Chilean Supreme Court
and could stand trial for human rights abuses.
Some 3,000 people died or disappeared during his rule. Pinochet
returned to Chile in March after 503 days under arrest in Britain,
where he escaped extradition to Spain on the grounds that he was
too ill for a trial.
