Finally, we find out that the Republicans are good at fighting
Republicans. Once when they find out that all of them should
be fighting radical liberal, pro-communist, anti-American,
Clinton loving Democrats things should be really different.

Bush Staff Taking Over GOP National Committee
NewsMax.com Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000
Campaign aides of Gov. George Bush have staged what insiders
allegedly told the Washington Post is a "hostile takeover" of the
Republican National Committee.
According to the Posts Thomas B. Edsall, Bush aides and the GOP
National Committee are in "a bitter dispute over who is to blame
for controversial ads and for the general difficulties facing the
Bush campaign."
Edsall attributes the latest dustup to what he calls "the
increasingly adversarial relations between the Bush campaign's
Austin headquarters and the party bureaucracy in Washington."
He adds that lower-ranking staffers in the Bush and National
Committee ranks who have discussed the alleged controversy are
afraid to allow their names to be used, giving rise to the
suspicion that what is involved here are the egos of people in
both camps, rather than a substantive dispute over tactics that
might indicate a sense of disorder and even panic among
Republicans.
Edsall claims that the whole thing started with a television
commercial that was first approved and then rejected by the Bush
people. He says that Bush officials blame RNC political director
David Israelite for the furor that erupted in a spate of negative
publicity about internal disorder. Edsall says that other
campaign sources and Bush supporters contend that the
highest-ranking Bush strategists in Austin approved the disputed
ad.
The ad was promptly dumped when it was discovered that the clip
showing Gore denying that Clinton had ever lied dated back to
1992, and was therefor misleading.
As a result of the problem, two of Bushs people, Fred Meyer and
Maria Cino, have taken over responsibility from Israelite for
party ads and for polling, "two key functions of the RNC."
Moreover, Edsall reports that RNC communications director
Clifford May has been "taken out of the loop," according to his
informants. May disputed that, saying, "I've got plenty of work
to do. ... They are partners, we value them." He added that the
Bush campaign has conducted a "friendly" takeover of the RNC, as
is usual in presidential election years when the nominee, after
all, is the titular head of the party.
This brings us to what appears to be the point of the Post story.
The paper, no friend of Bush, zeroes in on an ad attacking Gore
for his involvement in the Buddhist temple fund-raising scandal
an ad some political experts say has proved very damaging to the
vice president whenever it is shown.
"According to some campaign sources, the "Buddhist monk" ad, as
it is generally known, was not extensively tested before focus
groups, despite an investment of an estimated $3 million to $4
million in buying television time," Edsall wrote.
An unidentified RNC source told Edsall the "concept" of the ad
was tested before a focus group, but "not the final content."
Edsall says that critics, who he fails to identify, told him this
was not adequate for such a costly project. But Edsall also
admits that his RNC source said the ad was tested twice, and a
campaign source in Austin said the findings were "fabulous."
The Post story says that the Gore campaign has tested the ad in
their own focus groups and dismissed the ad as failing to move
voters. "You can just say we felt no need to respond to it, and
we would have if it was doing any damage," a Gore campaign
strategist said, a sure sign, experts say, that the ad hurts
Gore.
"If the ad wasnt effective they wouldnt be downplaying it," a
former GOP aide with vast experience in presidential campaigns
told NewsMax. "As far as disputes between the candidates staff
and the pros at the RNC goes, that kind of thing has happened in
every presidential election. Its a clash of egos between people
scambling for status and has nothing to do with the state of the
campaign."
