: An article by Sam Kiley in Jerusalem. Gleaned from London Times.
: RABBIS OUTRAGED AT BARAK'S DRIVE TO BEGIN DOT-COM ERA>
: Hoping to exploit deepening rifts between religious and secular Israelis,
: Edhu Barak has launched a campaign to capture the votes of immigrants and
: the dot-com generation in a move that has provoked cries of sacrilege from
: leading rabbis.
: Dubbed a "secular revolution", the Israel Prime Minister has vowed to drag
: his country into the 21st century with sweeping reforms which his critics
: say undermine the Jewish nature of the Israel state.
: Planes to allow couples to be married by someone other than an Orthodox
: rabbi, to expand transport on the Sabbath and to abolish the Ministry of
: Religious Affairs have won majority support. In Tel Aviv, the biggest city
: in the 52-year old state, which is a center of the drug and club scene with
: a huge gay population and a Western outlook, support for what are considered
: long overdue is guaranteed.
: In the Holy City, which is politically dominated by the ultra-Orthodox
: sects, which scorn cellular telephones for woman because they "encourage
: harlotry"' Mr. Barak's plans have been welcome by a die hard secular clique
: which expresses its support by eating pork in defiance of kosher regulations
: In a town overrich in symbolism where restaurateurs employ inspectors at
: considerable expense, chefs in some of Jerusalem trendier bistros offer
: bacon with more or less anything to show modernity. Such an invitation was
: once a whispered, almost illicit exchange.
: Now the doubly non-kosher "pork ribs with goat's cheese" is a particular hit
: and diners believe they are striking a blow for freedom against religious
: oppression.
: Opinion polls published last week showed that 56 per cent of Israeli backed
: proposals to allow civil marriages. Just over half supported plans to allow
: shops to open on the day of rest. And almost two thirds backed proposals to
: allow El Al to fly on the Sabbath. In his attempt to secure his place in
: history in Israel politics and in history, Mr Barak further alienated the
: religious parties in his coalition which walked out over July's failed Camp
: David summit.
: On Octover 29, he will have to face the Knesset when it reconvens after a
: summer break with only 23 out of 120 members backing him. He will cut a
: lonely figure unless his efforts to rally the secular vote behind him
: succeed.
