The scarcity and great density of gold make it the most ideal form of barter. Paper is too heavy to use as "money" unless we are to cheat others with it. Whereas you might get a new Cadilac with two hands full of gold coins, it would take several truck loads of paper--unless you con the car dealer to believe the paper is something that it isn't. Also in Article 1, Section 10: "No state shall pass any law impairing the obligations of contracts". This section essentially proscribes both legal tender and license laws.* Lincoln made totalitarian government possible with his unconstitutional legal tender acts that made it possible for government to take everything and pay for nothing.
