A report filed by Jack Kelley of USA Today [but so far unpublished] provides a different picture of what is actually happening in Israel than most of the mainstream reports that make it into America's newspapers.
According to the report, this is what is really happening. Remember, this is an eyewitness account from a professional reporter on the scene. Palestinians are now attacking Israeli soldiers in well-planned and coordinated ambushes. The ambushes are being conducted, not just by street thugs, but also by PA police, civilian ambulance drivers and young boys recruited as cover for the attacks.
The Palestinians aren't just throwing rocks, but have started bringing up heavy artillery, including RPG's, or, hand held rocket propelled grenade launchers. Israeli vehicles are peppered with bullet holes. As one Israeli commander said, they weren't made by BB guns. Palestinian snipers are shooting from rooftops of houses, without the knowledge of the home's occupants. Israeli tanks, firing at the snipers, are blowing up private homes. The occupants blame the Israelis, not knowing about the snipers who deliberately put them in harm's way. Israeli troops have been issued clear rules of engagement.
They have been ordered only to fire rubber bullets when in extreme danger, and are ordered to shoot for the legs of the rioters. Only Israeli snipers in combat with Palestinian snipers are permitted to shoot to kill, and then only after being given the order specifically by commanders on the scene. In one ambush, a group of boys set fire to a pile of tires. After the smoke thickened, a Palestinian with an RPG took aim at an Israeli tank. The smoke cleared just in time for the Israeli snipers to shoot the man with the grenade launcher. Meanwhile, under the cover of the smoke, Palestinian private cars are driving up to the front lines to unload automatic weapons.
As one PA activist told USA Today, "We have weapons, resources and people we haven't yet used. What you're seeing now is just the beginning. What the boys have begun, we are now going to finish." In other words, it's open war!
