The vote will come about two years ahead of schedule. The date of the elections was expected to be set in the coming days through negotiations. The opposition has recommended they be held in May. Barak's move Tuesday came as parliament prepared to vote on five opposition bills calling for early elections. But this does not mean that Ehud Barak is down - maybe the opposite. The "Gamla Shall Not Fall Again" organization suggested that we will see, in the near future, Barak nodding towards the PA/PLO with all sorts of "gestures" for the month of Ramadan, hoping for one of two things: 1. The PA/PLO will respond and calm will return to Israel. Barak knows that this is the thing Israelis want most. He is betting that this could turn into votes for him, while the public will punish the right for forcing elections during a crisis. 2. The PA/PLO will not respond. In this case, he can open the lid on the IDF [Israel Defense Force] to hit back, showing that he was so willing for peace, but the PA/PLO would not accept this, and fighting for now is the only alternative. He will hope to gain on the left by showing just how far he was willing to go, and on the right, by becoming more "Catholic than the Pope". Does this mean the return of Binyamin Netanyahu? Maybe ... stay tuned. :: MEANWHILE, THE VIOLENCE CONTINUES: The violence throughout Israel continued this week. While the number of incidents is reported to be down somewhat, the intensity of the attacks has escalated. To the dismay of the Israelis, the Palestinian sharpshooters actually are killing Israeli officers and civilians from a distance. The Palestinians have accumulated detailed intelligence of Israeli troop movement on the roads and in the bases and settlements and have improved their aim, according to a report in YEDIOT ACHRONOT (Nov. 26, 2000). [Editor's note: It was the United States Central Intelligence Agency that trained the PLO police and the sharpshooters.] The remote-control method of terrorist bombing, executed in Hadera a week ago Wednesday, is frighteningly cold-blooded - even in the deadly terms of massacre by terror. The perpetrators park the rigged car and then sit and watch from another vehicle or a cafe, at a safe distance of 50-60 meters (54-65 yards). When enough passersby are gathered within range of the car bomb, the terrorists push the button, spewing death and destruction. The initial investigation indicates that the novel device of a cell phone pad is being used in the most recent Palestinian bombing attacks to activate the devices at a distance, after which the terrorists drive off unnoticed, under cover of the pandemonium and after-shock. The method first surfaced in the bomb-attack on Jerusalem's open-air market three weeks ago. Ibrahim Beni Ouda, a leader of Hamas's Izzedin Kassam military wing, had produced a chemical weapon "capable of killing thousands," the London-based AL-HAYAT AL-JADIDA (the PA/PLO's official newspaper) reported Tuesday. Ouda "secretly produced a chemical substance capable of killing thousands of Israelis if placed in the center of an Israeli city," the paper said. The paper did not say what became of the weapon after Ouda's death. Ouda was killed on Thursday when the car he was driving suddenly exploded in the city of Shechem. Israel said Ouda blew himself up as he transported a bomb meant for an attack against Israel. For the first time, uniformed Palestinian policemen were sighted behind the guns shooting at Gilo Monday night, under orders to move from house to house in Beit Jallah. Moreover, the sniper attacks on civilian buses on West Bank and Gaza highways are coupled with roadside charges and firebombs. An inspection of the damages on Tuesday morning revealed that some of the bullets fired from PA/PLO areas on Monday night against the Southern Hebron Hills community of Bet Haggai penetrated the community’s synagogue. There were no reports of injuries. :: IDF GENERAL: PALESTINIANS LIKELY KILLED 12-YR.-OLD BOY: O.C. Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Yom Tov Samiyeh said Monday that it is very likely that Palestinian bullets were those that killed 12-year-old Muhammed Al-Dura almost eight weeks ago. A video clip of his killing - filmed by a French journalist who happened to be there at the time - was broadcast all over the world, and Israel admitted then that its shots may have inadvertently killed the boy. Samiyeh, however, said that an in-depth investigation, including a re-enactment of the scene and computer simulations, show that the boy - who, for an as-yet unexplained reason, was caught in a crossfire - was most likely shot in the back by Palestinians. An investigation by former IDF sniper Yosef Doriel found that the guilty Palestinians most likely stood behind the cameraman. Pictures of the incident and possible explanations can be seen at <http://www.geocities.com/rachav/netzarim.html>. We urge you to look at the evidence! :: UN COMPLETES ITS YEARLY ANTI-ISRAEL RESOLUTIONS: In an annual ritual, the General Assembly on Friday strongly criticized Israel's policies toward the Palestinians and called its presence in Jerusalem and the Golan Heights illegal. Israel rejected the resolutions as outdated and one-sided. The resolutions are non-binding as only the Security Council has any power within the United Nations. :: THE PUSH FOR UN TROOPS IN YESHA CONTINUES: Palestinian supporters at the UN have introduced a draft resolution in the 15-member UN Security Council that calls for 2,000 unarmed observers to protect civilians in the disputed territories. Mali formally circulated the resolution on Wednesday, despite strong objections from Israel and the United States. The US, France, Britain, the Netherlands and Canada said they could not vote for a force without Israel's consent. But if the draft comes to a vote, only Washington may use its veto power to kill the measure, REUTERS reported. However US officials have expressed concern that a veto would only feed Arab fire. No date has yet been set for the discussion of the draft. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami travel to Scandinavia Thursday for talks in Sweden, Norway and Denmark that diplomatic officials are saying will deal in part with the idea of sending some kind of international force here to help calm down the violence. Although Barak has adamantly opposed any international force at this time, Ben-Ami and Tourism Minister Amnon Lipkin-Shahak, who has been leading consultations with the Palestinians since the weekend, are more amenable to the idea, one diplomatic source said. :: ON THE NORTHERN FRONT: IDF soldier, Sergeant Chalil Taher, 27, from Acre, was killed in a Sunday morning terrorist attack in northern Israel. Two soldiers were injured in the blast. On Sunday morning a powerful roadside blast was detonated by Hizb'Allah terrorists as the IDF force was on routine patrol in the Sheeba Farm area of the northern border. The IDF retaliated with artillery fire and an aerial assault against Hizb'Allah targets. The IDF Spokesman released a special announcement Monday emphasizing, in contrast to previous announcements by Hizb'Allah reported in the media, that the explosion of the roadside bomb took place not in disputed territory, but within Israeli territory, close to a kilometer (0.6 mile) south of the final IDF redeployment line as confirmed by the United Nations. The Hizb'Allah terrorists who kidnapped three IDF soldiers on the Lebanese border some two months ago disguised themselves as UN peacekeepers, and were driving an official UN vehicle. So says a special investigation conducted by IDF Northern Command. A senior Israeli security official said Friday that UN peacekeepers in Lebanon helped Hizb'Allah terrorists "in a passive way" kidnap three Israeli soldiers on the Lebanese-Syrian border in October. "As far as we understand, the Hizb'Allah fighters who captured the Israeli soldiers south of the blue line probably did it using UNIFIL (UN Interim Forces in Lebanon) equipment...clothes, vehicles, radio, weapons, flags whatever," the senior security official told a press briefing. :: ANTI-SEMITISM CONTINUES TO RISE: Jews in the western Russian city of Kursk are living in a state of fear after the newly-elected governor said it was time to rid Russia of Jewish "filth", and an official of the outgoing administration was beaten up by thugs shouting anti-Semitic slogans. The remarks by the communist governor, Alexander Mikhailov, have provoked a political storm in Russia and aroused fears among Jewish leaders of a re-emergence of Soviet-style official anti-Semitism. There has also been dismay at the Kremlin's silence on the issue. Vladimir Putin has made no attempt to distance himself from Mikhailov, who claimed the President actively supported his campaign and was an ally in his crusade against the "world Jewish conspiracy". Jewish leaders in Australia are attributing a recent upsurge in anti-Semitic acts to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. The leaders say they have received more than 100 reports of anti-Semitic incidents since October 1, shortly after the latest round of Palestinian violence began. More than 50 incidents have occurred in New South Wales, Australia's most populous state. Some of the worst incidents have taken place in Sydney, which is located within the state. The Jewish Week (NY) claims that anti-Israel/Jewish vandalism has become common place at University campuses across America. From SUNY Binghamton, to University of California at Berkeley and University of Illinois, Jews have been targeted and intimidated by Muslim and Arab students as well as by other Jew-haters. "Experts say it reflects a trend at US colleges resulting from the intensifying Mid-East crisis". :: REMINDER: TEMPLE MOUNT IS HOLIEST JEWISH SITE ON EARTH: Is the ASSOCIATED PRESS reporting objectively? In one of its articles on the Middle East Sunday, it writes of the Temple Mount as "The al-Aqsa Mosque, part of a compound in east Jerusalem that Israeli troops captured in 1967, is the third-holiest shrine in the Muslim world." No mention is made of the fact that it is the first-holiest shrine in Judaism. Another AP article Sunday, featuring a similar sentence, quotes Egyptian President Mubarak as calling for "the liberation of al-Aqsa Mosque," and a Jordanian official as expressing the hope for salvaging "the blessed al-Aqsa Mosque from the hands of the aggressors..."; no mention is made of Israel's 3,500+-year-old connection with the site. :: TEMPLE MOUNT CLOSURE CONTINUES: The Supreme Court decided Wednesday not to intervene in the police decision not to allow Jewish worship on the Temple Mount. The judges said that when the Jerusalem Police Commissioner decides that Jews can pray there, he would allow them to do so. One of those who filed the suit, Amanah Settlement Organization's treasurer, Moshe Yogev, said, "We were thrown out of Joseph's Tomb; the Shalom al Yisrael synagogue in Jericho was burnt; Kever Rachel is practically off-limits; and now even Temple Mount? The only thing that's left is the Machpelah Cave in Hebron, which we have fought for - apparently the only thing that works is force, even for such a basic and fundamental thing as this." :: KNESSET PROTECTS JERUSALEM: The Knesset voted in favor of the final reading of the Jerusalem Bill Monday. The bill stipulates that a majority of 61 MKs is required to approve any change to the borders of Jerusalem. Likud MK Yehoshua Matza, who sponsored the bill, said that it would head off any attempts by the government to implement the "unprecedented concessions" made by Barak in Jerusalem. The bill was approved by a large margin with a vote of 84-19. The Basic Law on Jerusalem forbids the transfer of any powers, national or municipal, in Jerusalem into the hands of any organization or body that does not fall under the jurisdiction of the State of Israel. :: HERE WE GO AGAIN: Shin Bet chief Avi Dichter said last week the security service has increased its surveillance of "radical right-wing Jewish settlers" to ensure that no underground organization is being formed to attack Palestinians. Dichter, speaking during his first briefing to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, said he found no evidence of a rumored right-wing Jewish underground in the territories planning such attacks. He praised settlers for their restraint in the difficult situation they have faced in two months of unrest. He said Shin Bet personnel regularly meet settler representatives to ensure the restraint continues.
