Peace at any cost is a Prelude to War!

And last, the Clintons accepted $190,027 in gifts just in time before
HILLARY! took her Senate oath and would be subject to Senate ethics
rules. One of the "donors," insurance baron Walter Kaye -- the same
Walter Kaye who recommended Monica Lewinsky for her White House job --
gave the Clintons $9,683 in gifts, including, notably, a humidor for
Bill's cigars.

UPRIGHT

"Holding folks accountable for misdeeds in Washington has flat gone
out of style." --David Hackworth {} "Few Americans realize it, but
the Democratic Party adheres to the basic premise of Marxist political
parties. The defining characteristic of a Marxist party is class
warfare." --Paul Craig Roberts {} "Squabbling has replaced debating.
Unlike our ancestors, we don't want to discuss basic questions of
political philosophy." --Joseph Sobran ++ "Kennedy demonstrated
gross ignorance about the [the Second Amendment]. To throw such an
intemperate, public hissy-fit, he must have counted on -- and
correctly so -- the ignorance of his senatorial colleagues, the news
media and most Americans." --Walter Williams ++ "If his name is
Lieberman and he is Jewish, his nomination evokes celebration. If his
name is Ashcroft and he is Christian, his nomination evokes a hue and
cry about 'divisiveness' and mobilizes a wall-to-wall liberal
coalition to defeat him." --Charles Krauthammer ++ "Politicians
like Ted Kennedy are Orwellian caricatures who apparently believe that
TYRANNY IS FREEDOM.... If the American public ever wakes up to this
fact, these political charlatans will hopefully suffer the same fate
as the defunct tyrants of the former communist countries." --Thomas J.
DiLorenzo ++ "The Senate has a constitutional right and duty to vet
Cabinet appointees. But it doesn't have the right to pick the Cabinet
of its own preference, and it never has...." --Andrew Sullivan  {}
"Shhh. Listen. There: That sound you're not hearing is the Rev. Jesse
Jackson's prophetic voice. It's probably been stilled for only a week,
but we'll take what we can get." --National Review Online ++ "I
wouldn't be surprised if [Jesse Jackson] said 'this is Selma all over
again' when the dry cleaner loses his shirts (as if the people's
preacher goes to the dry cleaners himself)." --Jonah Goldberg ++
"Affirmative action achieves leveling by unabashed pretence." --Fred
Reed {} "While egotistical nonsense can be expected from most
presidents, Clinton, in prime form, has managed to take it to a trashy
new level. ... There was never enough exposure for Clinton and his
pathological need for attention." --Ryan McMaken

EDITORIAL EXEGESIS

"Anger over Bill Clinton's abuse of the pardoning process mounted
[Wednesday], as well it should. This page has criticized Mr. Clinton
for his last-minute pardon of the fugitive commodities trader Marc
Rich. But a broader look at Mr. Clinton's final pardon list makes
clear that the outrage extends well beyond the undeserved leniency for
Mr. Rich. We are particularly troubled by the numerous instances in
which Mr. Clinton granted pardons or commutations without proper
consultation with federal prosecutors, often to reward friends or
political allies or gain future political advantage,." --New York
Times

DEZINFORMATSIA

This week's "Hyper-Hypocrisy" Award: "It was 20 years ago today, the
United States Supreme Court handed down its landmark abortion-rights
ruling and the controversy hasn't stopped since. Today, with the
stroke of a pen, President Clinton delivered on his campaign promise
to cancel several anti-abortion regulations of the Reagan-Bush years."
--CBS talkinghead Dan Rather, Jan. 22, 1993, after Bill Clinton
revoked President Reagan's pro-life executive orders. ++ "This was
President Bush's first day at the office and he did something to
quickly please the right flank in his party: He reinstituted an
anti-abortion policy that had been in place during his father's term
and the Reagan presidency, but was lifted during the Clinton years."
--Dan Rather on Monday of this week with a little different take on
the "right flank." ++ "If confirmed, conservative Missouri
Republican Senator John Ashcroft will be this nation's next Attorney
General. With this move Mr. Bush rewards a defeated U.S. Senator,
calms the far right politically, and makes a decidedly law and order
statement." --NBC Anchor Brian Williams on the "far right." ++ "Well,
you know, Attorney General is actually an important job. Why can't
they buy off the right wing with unimportant jobs? I mean, this is a
sop, I assume, to buy off the wing nuts." --Newsweek Assistant
Managing Editor Evan Thomas on the "right wing."

Editor's note on the media blackout of the Wichita multiple
torture/rape/murder case.... The Federalist inquired as to why the
local District Attorney's office refuses to declare the massacre a
"hate crime." We discovered that the prosecutor claims the victims
were robbed and, therefore, the motive was robbery rather than race.
You may recall that Matthew Shepard, the homosexual man who was
brutally murdered by two thugs in Wyoming, and subsequently became a
cause celeb martyr for those pushing "gender orientation" as a "hate
crime" motive, was also robbed.

VILLAGE IDIOTS

This week's "Homo Liberalus Americanus" Award: "I don't think about
any legacy. I just do, every day, what comes up that day for me to do
to help people. ... I just do what I have to do, every day sending out
more seeds. And hope some of them take root." --Jesse Jackson
speaking at a Martin Luther King Jr. tribute in New York the night
before the "Love Child" bomb was dropped. {} This week's "TheoLib"
Award: "Invoking 'the Father, the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ' and 'the
Holy Spirit,' Billy Graham's son, the man selected by President George
W. Bush to bless his presidency, excluded the tens of millions of
Americans who are Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Shintoists, Unitarians,
agnostics and atheists from his blessing by his particularistic and
parochial language." --Alan Dershowitz **We are reminded that, in his
ranting, Dershowitz excluded "Hindus, Zoroastrians, Taoists, Sikhs,
deists, pantheists and adherents of the Baha'i faith. {} This week's
"Heterophobia" Award: The editor of a New York entertainment guide,
Time Out New York, apologized for listing Cardinal John O'Connor's
death as one of the best things to happen in its "Best and Worst of
2000" issue. The homosexual advocacy publication noted, "The press
eulogized him as a saint, when in fact, the pious creep was a
stuck-in-the-1950s anti-gay menace. Good riddance!" {} From the
"Village Academic Curriculum" File: "Government schools, with your tax
money, now discourage the teaching of multiplication tables by rote
memorization but teach reading by the 'look-and-say' method which is
memorization of spelling patterns. In doing so, they ensure that
children will neither be able to read nor calculate." --Greg Perry

SHORT CUTS

"[The Clintons] got all that money FROM China during the 1996
re-election campaign. Why should we be surprised if they get all that
money FOR china now?" --Kelly Ann Fitzpatrick {} "News Flash: James
C. Hormel, of the Hormel meat family, who became the nation's first
openly gay ambassador, is urging the Senate to reject John Ashcroft's
nomination to be attorney general. Reality Check: No one cares."
--Rich Galen {} "Bill Clinton sitting on Air Force One getting his
hair cut while people around the country cooled their heels and waited
for him, became a metaphor for a populist president who had gotten
drunk with the perks of his own power." --Former Clinton press
secretary Dee Dee Myers {} "It's early yet, but I think we already
have the father of the year for 2001--Jesse Jackson." --Lyn Nofziger
{} "...[T]oday's Washington is about as attentive to the Tenth
Amendment as the Unitarian Church is to the Book of Revelation."
--Joseph Sobran {} "In the most disturbing news to celebrity
watchers on the left since Lenin and Trotsky split, Oscar-winning
actress Kim Basinger and actor Alec Baldwin have filed for divorce
after seven years of marriage." --Gene Callahan {} "Democrats are
mobilizing to keep George W. Bush from delivering on his promise to
cut taxes. Many have expressed concern that it could signal a
dangerous trend toward elected officials keeping their campaign
promises." --Cartoon duck "Mallard Fillmore" by Bruce Tinsley  {}
"Warner Bros. confirmed that drug paraphernalia was found on the set
of the 'Harry Potter' movie. The working title of the film: 'Harry
Potter and the Sorcerer's Stoned'." --Jerry Perisho {} "The wife of
a soldier at Fort Drum, N.Y., has been busted for feeding pot-laced
cookies to GIs. Is that what they mean by the military being on high
alert?" --Daily Scoop {} "I know Howard was not looking for sex or a
prostitute. He was looking for a hobby shop." --Jeff Anderson,
attorney for a 72-year-old Minnesota judge who was arrested for
soliciting {} "When you reach my age and you find yourself eating
light bulbs for a living, you know you've made some bad career moves
along the way." --Matt Hely, 46, on his life as a circus performer

Night Lines:

Leno.... We have a new president! Did you see the inaugural? The way
Gore smiled at Bush, it was about as phony as Hillary smiling at Bill.
... Clinton is going to get his own office here in New York. I think
it's in Manhattan -- that new place, One Impeachment Plaza, up on the
Upper East Side. .... With all the blackouts here in California
experts think there could be a baby boom in nine months. Well,
especially if Jesse Jackson is around. Jesse has admitted to [an
affair] with a woman that he worked [with] at the Rainbow Coalition.
.. It gives a new meaning to "affirmative action." She said, "You
want some action?" He said, "Affirmative." .... Hypocrite of the
month goes to [Demo] Sen. Paul Wellstone. He was one of the loudest
voices about congressional term limits. When he ran, he said he would
only serve two terms and then get out. He announced yesterday that he
is running for a third term. I guess two terms wasn't enough time to
break all his campaign promises. **Nope, we give this one to Jesse!

Letterman.... Letterman's Top Things That I've Learned From The
Clinton Years: That Hee-Haw stuff is funny on TV but not in the White
House. A White House internship provides hands-on experience. You can
have sex without having sex, as long as while you're having sex you
don't actually have sex. You can jog every day and still be a chunky
tub. As long as the economy is good, Americans believe anything you
tell them. Hillary looks really hot in those pantsuits. You can be
Vice President in the most prosperous time in America, run against a
dumb guy, get more votes and still lose.

Hamilton.... Linda Tripp told ABC's "20/20" that she's had her face
lifted, her nose fixed and her eyes done. It's all about survival.
With Bill Clinton becoming a free man, it's never too late to enter
the Federal Witness Protection Program.
