According to Wiccans, winter is a MASCULINE time of year, the time when
the horned escort of the Great Mother Goddess rules the earth, because
the GMG has 'gone to sleep'...winter, far from being considered
'fertile', is instead considered barren. It isn't until the GMG returns
in the spring in her guise as maiden that fertility returns to the
earth...
And if one takes the precession of the equinoxes into consideration, it
was really under the sign of Aquarius that winter began in the
northern hemisphere when most of these belief systems began...
