-Caveat Lector- Israel's global military links exposed http://www.globes.co.il/serveEN/globes/docView.asp?did=497355&fid=942 Dror Marom 12.06.2001 18:11 This week, the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies at Tel Aviv University exposed Israel's military relations with Third World countries in its 2000-01 edition of the Middle East Military Balance. Most of the deals with these countries have remained secret until now. Arms deals with Muslim Indonesia, which has no diplomatic relations with Israel, are also revealed. The Middle East Military Balance reveals an arms deal with Cambodia, which upgraded its MiG-21s in 1997, when the country was on the verge of all-out civil war. The book does not disclose which company carried out the project, but it is known that Israel Aircraft Industries and Elbit Systems (Nasdaq: ESLTF) upgrade MiG-21s. The books also states that avionics for L-39 trainers were supplied. The Middle East Military Balance also reveals an arms deal with junta-ruled Myanmar (formerly Burma), which received Israeli air-to-air missiles, while another Israeli company upgraded the country's F-7 fighter jets (the Chinese version of the MiG-21). Rafael (Armament Development Authority) builds Israel's advanced air-to-air missiles. Israel has full diplomatic relations with Myanmar. The Middle East Military Balance also details arms deals with the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal, stating that Israel supplied the Nepalese Army with Israel Military Industries-manufactured Galil assault rifles in 1997. Zambia, in central Africa, was provided with IDF combat doctrines, advisors, technicians, and foreign trainers. The Middle East Military Balance states that an Israeli company had received a contract to upgrade Zambian Air Force MiG-21s, but the project was frozen in 1999. The Middle East Military Balance states that in 2000, Israel supplied Sri Lanka with Kfir fighter jets from the IAI and Israel Air Force surplus supplies. Sri Lanka also received Saar model 4.5 missile boats and Super Hawk UAVs, as well as mine detection radar in 1997 and electronic warfare systems in 1998. Sri Lanka's need for Israeli arms was the motivation behind the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries six months ago. The east African republic of Uganda also has military relations with Israel, according to the Middle East Military Balance. An Israeli company won a contract to upgrade MiG-21s, which was later frozen. The Middle East Military Balance does not mention the project to upgrade the Uganda Air Forces Hercules C-130 transports, published in "Globes", and carried out by IAI's Bedek division. Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim country, which does not have diplomatic relations with Israel, has bought arms from it. The Middle East Military Balance states that Indonesia bought UAVs in 1996. Earlier reports state that Indonesia has procured IAF surplus Skyhawk fighter-bombers. Central American republic Nicaragua is also an arms customer of Israel. The Middle East Military Balance reveals that Israel sold IAI-manufactured Dabur torpedo boats to the Nicaraguan Navy in 1997. The Middle East Military Balance also details arms deals with: Argentina, which selected Israel to upgrade its planes, as well as its Head Up Displays (HUD) for pilots, and radar systems; Chile, which bought missile boats, air-to-air missiles, artillery, Barak shipborne anti-missile missiles, UAVs and tankers; Croatia, which upgraded its MiG-21s; Cyprus, which bought torpedo boats and electronic communications systems; and the Czech Republic, which bought radar for ground forces. Deals with India that appeae in the publication include the sale of advanced early-warning systems, Harpy attack UAVs, radar for Jaguar fighter jets, Rafael-manufactured Litening pods, ballistic missile detection radar, tank upgrades, ships, rifles, and fighter jets. China has bought Python 3 air-to-air missiles, radars, thermal imaging tank sights, and received training from the IDF. Singapore has upgraded its US-built F-5 fighter jets and bought Barak shipborne anti-missile missiles, air combat debriefing systems, and helicopter night vision systems. It should be noted that Israel's relations with Singapore are not acknowledged by the IMI and the Ministry of Defense.
