THE O'REILLY FACTOR
June 29, 2001 Friday

Is the FBI Closing in on Congressman Gary Condit?

GUEST: Jill Ishkanian

BILL O'REILLY, HOST: THE O'REILLY FACTOR from Boston is on. Tonight, is the
FBI closing in on Congressman Gary Condit in the Chandra Levy case? We'll
have the very latest for you.

...

And now for the top story tonight. Is the FBI closing in on Congressman
Gary
Condit? It has been eight weeks since Chandra Levy disappeared. Now reports
say Condit is a ladies man and might well have had an affair with a
24-year-old woman. He still denies that.

Joining us now from Los Angeles is Jill Ishkanian, a reporter for "Star
Magazine," who has brought some very interesting information on this case
to
light.

You know, just like the O.J. -- not the O.J. Simpson case, the Jesse
Jackson
case, where the supermarket tabloids, as I said, were way ahead, "The
National Enquirer" on the Jackson case, and you, "The Star," have been way
ahead on this Condit case, what -- what do you know about this thing? What
can you tell us?

JILL ISHKANIAN, "STAR MAGAZINE" REPORTER: Well, first, let me give credit.
I'm not alone in this. We have a great staff here in L.A. that's just been
working really hard on this, I would say, for the past, you know, probably
eight weeks or seven weeks at least. And Cliff...

O'REILLY: All right, we don't need to go through -- we don't need to go
through all of that. We know you have a good staff. Tell us what you know.

ISHKANIAN: Well, we know that the FBI has questioned Ann Marie Smith, a
stewardess for a major U.S. airline, and asked her about her year-long
affair with Congressman Condit, which coincided exactly with when Condit
was
seeing missing intern Chandra Levy. They have questioned her about, you
know, whether he was seeing her and Chandra Levy, to which she has
responded
that she felt in March of this year he was seeing another woman. She
confronted him about it.

O'REILLY: All right. Let me stop you there. So the FBI has questioned this
airline hostess. Have you talked to her yourself?

ISHKANIAN: No, we have sources close to Ms. Smith who we've spoken to.

O'REILLY: All right, so you've spoken to friends of hers. Did you pay Ms.
Smith or her friends for information?

ISHKANIAN: It's no secret that "Star," you know, it pays...

O'REILLY: Yeah, no, I know that. I just want to know in this case...

ISHKANIAN: Yes, we have.

O'REILLY: ... so you gave a little bit of money and they told you what Ms.
Smith told the FBI. We know that the FBI has interviewed her.

So the FBI basically is trying to confirm that Condit did have a sexual
relationship with Chandra Leary. That's No. 1 -- Levy. That's No. 1,
correct?

ISHKANIAN: Correct. That's correct.

O'REILLY: All right. And what other corroborating evidence of that do you
have
aside from the flight attendant's testimony?

ISHKANIAN: We have -- we have sources close to Mr. Condit's bodyguard,
Vince
Flammini, who basically confirmed the exact same thing. The difference with
Mr. Flammini is here's a guy who has spent the last 10 years with Mr.
Condit,
driving him around, acting as his bodyguard, his...

O'REILLY: And what does Mr. Flammini say? What has he told the FBI?

ISHKANIAN: Basically he confirms the affair with Ann Marie Smith. He links
Chandra Levy to Mr. Condit, and he even links him prior to what Mr. Condit
is
telling the FBI.

O'REILLY: What do you mean by "links"? Does this guy, the bodyguard,
actually
say they were having an affair?

ISHKANIAN: Through sources, he has confirmed that. And that's exactly what
the...

O'REILLY: All right, so you believe that this guy, Flammini, who used to be
the congressman's chauffeur, has told the FBI that yes, indeed, there was a
physical relationship between the two?

ISHKANIAN: That's correct.

'REILLY: All right. Now, the FBI also, you've reported, has a theory in
this case. And what is that theory?

ISHKANIAN: Their theory that they are investigating right now is that Ms.
Levy became despondent after Mr. Condit dumped her. "Star" has the final
words were "goodbye" on Mr. Condit's voice mail, which the FBI has told Mr.
Flammini, and that they are investigating the suicide angle, that being
shoved out of her job, her internship, and then being dumped by Mr. Condit
threw her into a depression and that she killed herself. And that's what
they are investigating at this time.

O'REILLY: All right. But if she killed herself, where is the body?

ISHKANIAN: Well, that is not -- I am not investigating where -- that's the
police's job and they're investigating that. And...

O'REILLY: OK. All you know is that...

ISHKANIAN: That's the million-dollar question.

O'REILLY: ... they're looking at -- they're looking. If somebody commits
suicide, there's a body there unless they throw themselves into the Potomac
River, which I guess is possible, but not probable. That's not a real good
way to go.

rMDNM_Now when you say that the congressman -- and again, I mean, this is
all reporting coming out of "The Star Magazine," not to say that you're
wrong, I'm not saying that, but people should know where it's coming from -
- dumped Ms. Levy, are you sure -- why would he do that? I mean, he had
this
young girl. Why would he do that?

ISHKANIAN: Why would he do that? You know, he's got a wife coming to town
who hadn't visited Washington, D.C. in a while. He's got an intern who, you
know, on his hands who's calling him frequently. You know, he's got a lot
to
handle right then.

O'REILLY: Did Flammini tell the FBI why the congressman broke up the
relationship?

ISHKANIAN: Not to my knowledge. I believe he described other instances
where
he dumped -- it was time to dump the girl he was with, and the method that
he would dump them was always quite brusque. And his method with Ms. Smith
was to tell her, as soon as she saw the news reports on Ms. Levy
disappearing and linking Levy to the congressman, the congressman called
Ms.
Smith and said, we have to cool it for a while until the investigation is
over.

O'REILLY: All right. Well, we'll see what happens, Ms. Ishikany (sic) --
Miss...

ISHKANIAN: Ishkanian.

O'REILLY: ... Ishkanian. Boy, I'm having a tough time with the names today.
It's the jet lag coming up here to Boston. Ms. Ishkanian, thanks very much.
We appreciate it.

ISHKANIAN: Thank you.
