The Rodhams -- the family of a former first lady -- have always been quiet part-time neighbors, most people say. But that changed when, according to a police report, a love triangle turned violent early Sunday morning. Daniel Martin Coyne, 45, of P.O. Box 74, Lake Winola, is accused of assaulting the brother of U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., after finding him with his girlfriend at the Rodham family cottage. Mr. Coyne is free on $25,000 bail. He was charged with assault and burglary after twice attacking Anthony Dean Rodham, 47, of Washington, D.C., at the summer cottage, police said. According to the arrest affidavit, Mr. Coyne told police he climbed onto the porch of the cottage between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. and observed his girlfriend, Kelly Ann Quick, 36, and Mr. Rodham "having sex" in the living room. The small yellow cottage sits on a hill, and the front porch has no steps leading to it. Mr. Coyne had to scale the latticework up to the porch and haul himself over the railing. Mr. Coyne said he let himself in by the front door and started kicking Mr. Rodham. According to the affidavit, the noise woke Mr. Rodham's brother, Hugh Rodham, 49, of Coral Gables, Fla. Hugh Rodham came downstairs to find Mr. Coyne kicking Tony, who was in a fetal position in front of the couch on the living room floor. Hugh Rodham told Mr. Coyne to leave the house -- and he did. But Mr. Coyne told police he went back to the Rodham house a short while later, claiming he needed to get his house key from Ms. Quick. He said he found her with Tony Rodham on the front porch and attacked him again. Hugh Rodham and Ms. Quick helped to restrain Mr. Coyne after the second attack. Tony Rodham admitted hitting Mr. Coyne, but claimed it was in self defense, according to the affidavit. Mr. Coyne was arrested after calling state police from the emergency room at Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock, where he was treated for a swollen left eye, lacerations on his right leg and chest and a dislocated left shoulder. Tony Rodham had scrapes and abrasions on the left side of the face, chin and ear, and his nose was swollen, police said. No one answered the door at the cottage Monday. Members of the Rodham family usually spend a few weeks at the cottage, said Walter Rayannic, proprietor of the Lake View Meat Market, which is across the street from the Rodham cottage. "They come up here two or three weeks out of the year. And now they're cleaning the place up, doing some construction in there," Mr. Rayannic said. "I guess they had a little problem." Other neighbors said the Rodham brothers were overseeing a project to add a bathroom to the cottage. The little yellow house was built by the Rodhams' and Sen. Clinton's grandfather and has been a family vacation spot for years, neighbors said. Their father, Hugh Rodham Sr., was born in Scranton and resided in Lackawanna County until he moved to Chicago to work as a salesman in the lace industry. He died in 1993 and was buried in Scranton. Tony Rodham has a job history that includes insurance salesman, prison guard, cable-service repo man and a private investigator. He is a Washington consultant who travels around the world in search of business opportunities. In 1994, he married Nicole Boxer, daughter of U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., in a Rose Garden ceremony -- the last wedding to be held at the White House. They divorced last year. Hugh Rodham played football for Penn State, was a Peace Corps volunteer and spent more than a decade as an assistant public defender, including several years working in Miami's pioneering drug court. He is now a lawyer in Florida who works on class-action lawsuits. The brothers gained national attention in March 2001 when a congressional committee examined the controversial pardons and commutations President Clinton granted before leaving office in January. A House panel cited $434,000 that Hugh Rodham collected -- and subsequently repaid -- for lobbying the White House on behalf of two felons seeking presidential clemency. Tony Rodham acknowledged that he, too, lobbied Mr. Clinton on behalf of a friend and business associate who was later pardoned, but said he didn't receive money for his efforts. Mr. Coyne was arraigned before District Justice Russell Shurtleff in Factoryville on felony charges of burglary and criminal trespass and a misdemeanor charge of simple assault. The burglary charges stem from his entering the cottage, although he allegedly did not take any items, the affidavit said. Mr. Coyne was sent to the Wyoming County Prison but then released after posting bail. He faces a preliminary hearing on Aug. 28. Wyoming County District Attorney George Skumanick is continuing the investigation. ================================================================ Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh, YHVH, TZEVAOT FROM THE DESK OF: *Michael Spitzer* <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The Best Way To Destroy Enemies Is To Change Them To Friends ================================================================ <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/">www.ctrl.org</A> DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
